I always do the same. Cost is negligible, new saves time, and likely will be more reliable than using old cord over.

Personaly, I would replace the whole harness. Those wires get old and brittle after a while, and its best not to have problems while you're on the road!

On the trailers I have torn into, which is only two, those "wire nuts" that look like home-use marrette connectors are actually crimped connectors, and pretty durable. I'm sure they are used for ease of assembly, but they don't seem to be failure prone from what I've heard. I use a good-wuality butt-style crimped connector now that I have a quality crimper.

I haven't needed to tear into mine, yet, but did the wiring color coding coming from the trailer into the box match the new box and cable?

Yes it did and on mine they were wire nuts in a metal work box. My buddies son stopped by while we were doing it and helped. He rewires diesel hybrid locomotives for Norfolk Southern and couldn't believe how it was done.

The wire color on the harness I bought didn’t match. All the colors were right but none of them were on the right pole.

The box was spot on.

Just double check the harness.

I fixed mine with tape and lived to regret and repair anyway. The tape trapped water and accelerated corrosion. The connections became unreliable and had to be cleaned all of the time. At some point, you are going to want to replace.
