I've already been using a clean gas can as an aux tank, but I think the carb is hosed.I'm going to get a new one and slap it on hopefully this weekend. I will have the rear tank swapped out with a new one before it's all said and done.
Before you go buying a carb you have an 86 with a 300 six so that should be a feed back system.
Does the carb have a bunch of wires going to it and does the dist. have a gray box with wires and NO vacuum hose to it?
So what does that mean for you? You have a rude computer that adjusts the carb & timing in the dist. so this may be the time to change this to the older non-feed back system.
80 - 82 (maybe 83?) is non-feed back so can use that carb & DS II dist. a little rewiring for the DS II dist. & box and you are good to go.
There are post on this, do a search and read up.

Crap, it sure does. Now time for my next research project!
I'm going to see about pulling the carb and getting it rebuilt rather than pay for a new one. I won't be swapping it over to the older system right now. My goal is to just get the darn thing running.
If you are handy with a screw driver and can follow the directions they and not hard to rebuild.
I hear you on getting it running so you can figure out what else might need looking into.
Someone or 2 got into my carb, left parts out, thank god they were in the rebuild kit, and used wood & sheet metal screws for one missing and it was still missing screws!
It works pretty good for moving it in & out of the garage and I am sure it will be good once on the road.
I have never been blessed with a repaired gas tank that sealed, no matter what. Fortunately, new gas tanks are very reasonable, and likely not a whole lot more than a wrecker would charge for used one.

I do plan on putting a new main tank in there first off and then replacing the side tank later.
I swapped my 86' to a vacuum advance distributor and the ignition module. It only costed a little over $100 for brand new parts. I wouldn't go cheap on the coil though. I bought a Duralast from Autozone and it lasted 6 months. Now I have an Accel coil with a metal body. Amazing how well it cleaned up my engine bay with all the extra crap and the 'Brainbox' gone under the dash too. What a mess.
Finally some progress to report! Got the carb off, pretty easy actually. I had a mechanic buddy over for adult supervision. I took pics of it every step of the way. I ordered a reman carb for $150 so I can get that sucker on. My mechanic buddy agreed that the culprit for it not running is probably the carb. We did the "spray starter fluid in it" and it ran as long as there was spray but died after that. In the meantime, I'm going to get a new set of plugs and wires and teach my son how to change both. Every challenge is a teaching opportunity!
Put the new carb on with the help of my brother-in-law and after a squirt of starter fluid, it started right up! Turned it off, then started it three more times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It just purrs right along!
