Intermittent Shifting issues.
Newbie question here. I recently bought a 1997 Ford F250 7.3 liter. I've been experiencing two different intermittent shifting issues. The first more common issue is the transmission has trouble shifting through all the gears. Revs way up and then shifts hard. That has happened about 4 times. The other issue is it shifts smoothly through the lower gears and then just won't shift into 4th. No matter what I do it just keeps revving up. That issue has happened once or twice. Here is where it gets weird. I've also had an issue where the odometer and speedometer dont work. So today while I was driving I was experiencing the first shifting issue while also experiencing the odometer and speedometer not working. On a whim I whacked the dash above the control panel and the odometer and the speedometer came back to life and the truck started shifting normally. Any thoughts?

Think Mark is right, I'd have said change the sender on the rear diff. and look over the wiring, but if whacking the dash fixed it, that's probably the source. E4's use the speed sensor to determine shifts, so that's probably the cause.
