Choke creep

I have an inline 6 223 in a '64 F100.

Cold start, I'll use the choke to start it and then push it back in.

After I run on the road, between stop lights, the iengine is

idling a little high. I'll push the choke and it idles at the low setting. next few stop lights, it creeps out again.

Is there any way to fix this?

thanks

rtc

Have you pulled the air cleaner and verified the butterfly is actually moving when this happens? Also posable the linkage when using the throttle is doing this. Pull the choke on (without engine running) and move the throttle linkage several times and see if it happens.

It sounds like the throttle linkage is finding its way back onto the first step of the fast idle cam. Make sure the choke is being pulled off completely. If it is, turn the fast idle screw back 1/2 turn or so .

Unfortunately, with a manual choke carb, there is no fast idle cam, and no fast idle screw. There is only the idle screw, and a smooth cam that moves with the choke control to raise the idle a bit for cold running.
So. Check that the choke cable is routed with no sharp bends, and it should enter its mounting at 90º to the engine, so that engine movement will not 'pull' on the cable. It could be that some enterprising former owner thought that the cable needed another clip to keep it in it's place, and this is pulling on the cable when the engine torques over.

It requires some finagling, the outer spiral sheath, the inner wire, and the tension when everything is re-connected. It's a simple thing though annoying, as you've discovered. It always takes me a couple iterations to get it set just right after carb reinstallation. Start with the carb choke plate closed and try to get the sheath back in the same spot.

“Choke creep”

There are a couple creeps hereabouts that I’d like to choke out.

I have your same setup on my 64. I also had the same problem. I fixed mine in just a couple of minutes. With the choke **** pushed all the way in I took a needle nose pliers and made a VERY small kink in the inner cable right where it enters the spiral sheath. This gives it a little more friction to keep it from walking back out when you are driving. My cable still operates nicely just has slightly more friction. Make sure you start with a very small kink and see how it works. You can always bend it a little more if needed.
