I have the tool to remove the glow plug boot however the bottom portion of the boot ripped off when I tried to pull it off. The remaining portion is hard as a rock. I've been soaking it in penetrating oil and tried to pry it up with a screwdriver but it's starting to chip. Any suggestions on how to remove it?
Some use a screw, like a 3" wood screw and screw it in then pull it out.
Mine all broke up, I was having the valve cover out and other things in there out, so I pushed inside out (later model year only).
Penatrating oil won't do anything as far as helping. They are made of plastic,
The way I did my stuck ones was to take the valve cover off and use a clean long flat blade screwdriver.
You can see the top of the glow plug when you look down past the oil rail. Slide the blade in-between the top
of the plug and the connector and pry it out.
Here is a vies of the top of the glow plug from inside the rocker box You can see the tail end of the injector hold down clamp.
This just happened to me on my friends Excursion. I tried the screw trick but could not get enough bite. After several attempts, with the plastic being brittle, it started to fall apart. With some persistence and two pics we were able to remove the rest of the connector.
I used a 3 inch self drilling screw. Go slow. Let it drill. I also used brake clean to try and shrink the rubber. Long 9 inch needle nose pliers on the head stud. Squeeze and yank up. Worked great on 6 or 7 of mine
One thing that helps when removing is to be sure that the tangs of the tool are all the way in.
I think it may of been DTR (Ron) that showed bending the tool a bit so you get a batter angle
when pulling on the tool to remove the little beast.
