Glow Plug Removal

I found a bad gp. Its the front left one. A 12 v test light connected to the battery and touched to the shinny pin under where the connector was does not light.

Of the six gp's I could get to this is the only bad one.

Whats the best way to change it? I tried a search but it did not work.

Thanks!

Just unscrew it and hope the tip isnt swollen. Clean the dirt from around it so it doesnt fall in the hole when it comes out.

1) Soak with penetrating oil of your choice (PB Blaster, Kroil, WD-40, etc..)
2) Clear away any crud around the glow plug so it won't fall in the engine (air hose works great!)
3) remove old glow plug. I think a 5/16" deepwell socket fits, but could be wrong. You may need various extensions and a u-joint to make it work well, use 1/4" ratchet as the socket and stuff are smaller and easier to get between everything
4) coat threads of new glow plug with anti-seize
5) install new plug and put the connector back on

Thanks guys.

I take it that its unusual for there to be problems with tip breakage etc?

10mm deep socket for the glow plug. I use a craftsman ratchet with a swivel head to get in all the F-ed up angles it takes to pull em out - worth the investment.
2 questions: I pull the fuel lines off the injectors and bend them back slightly to get to the plugs. Is that wrong?
Shouldn't we change all the plugs at the same time?
Thanks.

You can slightly flex the lines but dont bend them stuff can flake off the inside and plug your injectors.

another thing, only put a motorcraft/beru glow plug in there. any other brand will only give you problems and burn out real fast.
you can get the beru ZD-9 from rock auto for $9.87 each

Ha. Jobber lied. All he had was autolite 1108. So I bought it. What came out was an 1108 so I assume they are all autolites.

I used a deep 3/8 socket to loosen and turned it out by hand. After install crank time to start went from one or two 10-20 second sessions to one >5 second one.

Since this is a $1000 vehicle so use only on occasion and to learn from, I have no plans at the present to change the plugs over to Motorcraft. Also a shot of ether starts it right up in any case so that is my backup.

Once started it runs and restarts flawlessly.
