I checked with two separate Ford dealerships and they both were totally up front regarding the fact that I could use the Mercon transmission fluid that now supersedes the actual transfer case fluid without concern. They basically left it up to me. I asked both dealership parts men if there was a significant price variance and the difference was less than $2.00 per quart at both Ford dealers. The more costly of the two by $1.83 per quart was the Transfer Case Fluid. Since the TC has a 2 qt. capacity I went with the specific Ford TC fluid. If there are Ford dealerships that are charging $25.00+ a quart for the specific TC fluid they obviously are gouging and way out of line.
Be aware, MERCON LV... not just MERCON.
They also sell MERCON V which is for the 4r100 and can not be used in the transfer case.
Amsoil is solid stuff. I put some of their 'severe gear' lube in the font and rear diffs on my Trailblazer after watching a comparison on the youtubes.
I have a bottle of Valvoline tranny fluid ready to drop in whenever I get motivation, but you can't go wrong with Amsoil IMO. From everything I've read, it's top of the line stuff. Personally, I don't mind spending a bit extra on 'quality' fluids (which is not necessarily always motocraft) and changing them every couple years if it means not having a catastrophic explosion down below. Just match up the correct weight/type and you should be fine.
However, I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find any mileage parameters for TC drain and refill.
I just checked my OM and they recommend changing the TC fluid every 150,000 miles during "normal" use and 60,000 when towing. Personally...I would do it a LOT more often than that; Mercon LV isn't that expensive.
I am going to order a case of the LV fluid, will that be enough to to the transmission? I am gonna drain the fluid and change the filter. Or is 12 quarts not enough? I think the om says 18.5 or 16.7. Is that completely empty or what?

yes, one case is enough. That amount you mention is all the fluid but with a drain and fill you will not get all fluid out.
Here is a great video on how to do it.
Thanks for all of the help!! I ordered a case of LV fluid and a new filter. I was going to put the truck up on my 2 post lift to do the fluid change and realized I did not have high enough extensions to not hit the running boards. So I ordered those and now need to take some time to do it. I have more questions but I will start new threads for those.

I just did the transmission service (filter+fluid) today as well as the transfer case fluid.
I did it with the truck on the ground on its wheels. It's not that bad that way.
