Hello all I am new to this site and recently a new (new to me) ford owner. I just purchased a 2011 Ford F250 4x4 with the 6.2 gas engine and the 6R140 Transmission. The truck has almost 58000 miles on it and I am going to do a trans fluid change and both axles as well. I was curious to see what brands of fluid people use. I use Amsoil in our 2004 Chevy Suburban and it seems to work well. Sorry if this subject has been beat to death!!

For my 99 F250 V10 in the rear axle I used Royal Purple as it was cheapest with the Friction Modifier for LSD, for the transmission I used Super Tech MerconV, Motorcraft XL in the Transfer case and Motorcraft filter and oil for the Engine. I have not changed the front as I haven't found the cover I want for it.
Cost effective and quality is what I am aiming for.
Check your manual....but I suspect that you will be needing some Mercon LV for the transmission, some 75W-140 for the rear and 80W-90 for the front diff.
If you can find some XL12, use that in the transfer case, otherwise Mercon LV will do.
I always, always, use OEM transmission fluid in my vehicles. My Hondas has Honda fluid, my Subarus had Subaru trans fluid and my F-350 uses the current Motorcraft fluid per the owner’s manual. I am not fond of aftermarket ‘replacement’ or ‘substitute for’ fluid as different transmission have different metals and their own unique lubrications properties so I stick with what the mechanical engineers call for.
That’s just me, though. Knock on wood I’ve never had a trans issue, ever.
Gear oil I use Mobil 1 and I stay with the recommended viscosity per the manual.

Mercon LV !!!! Absolutely positively nothing else, ever !
Also use Mercon LV for the transfer case.
The diffs I just use a synthetic gear oil in the right weights.

xl12 is no longer made and Ford is telling people to put Mercon LV in the transfer case.
MErcon LV goes for 6 bucks a bottle, last I checked xl12 was 25 dollars and up. It's a transfer case, not the space shuttle.
Thanks for the input!! I will round up some of the Ford LV fluid and a filter. I think I will order some gear oil from Amsoil. How do I find out if I have a limited slip rear axle? Is there a code for it along with the paint and other codes?

Yes, check the sticker in the door. Should have an axle code like 3E
Then when you know the axle code, google what the code means.
So my code on the sticker says 3e. So from the info I found is should be 3.73 gears with a electric locker. Do i need to add the additive to the rear axle when I change the gear oil?

Nope, no additives needed. You don't have limited slip and the additives are for limited slip. Use any synthetic gear oil in the correct weights.
Ironically I just drained and replaced the fluid in the transfer case. The 2009 owners manual calls specifically for "Transfer Case Fluid". The local Ford dealership had a small supply and since the transfer case capacity is just 2 quarts the dealer had enough. I have a very good friend who recently had a catastrophic transfer case failure. By catastrophic I mean there was shrapnel all over the road and the transfer case was essentially gone. I've since been told by technicians that it's important to keep the TC fluid changed. However, I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find any mileage parameters for TC drain and refill.
Within the past several months I did a flush and refill of the automatic transmission fluid on our F-250. I checked with several transmission technicians to see if there was a full synthetic that would be acceptable to be used in the Ford automatic trans and every one of them said to use Motorcraft fluid. I wanted to use a full synthetic thinking it would be added protection against heat and possible failure but no one would give me their blessing to do so.

Ford stopped making (or I should say distribute) xl12 transfer case fluid. Some dealers still have leftover quantities but once they run out they will tell you to use mercon lv (at least on the 6r140).
They won't tell you to use mercon lv until they run out of transfer case fluid (xl12 ) otherwise they'd be stuck with it.

I checked with two separate Ford dealerships and they both were totally up front regarding the fact that I could use the Mercon transmission fluid that now supersedes the actual transfer case fluid without concern. They basically left it up to me. I asked both dealership parts men if there was a significant price variance and the difference was less than $2.00 per quart at both Ford dealers. The more costly of the two by $1.83 per quart was the Transfer Case Fluid. Since the TC has a 2 qt. capacity I went with the specific Ford TC fluid. If there are Ford dealerships that are charging $25.00+ a quart for the specific TC fluid they obviously are gouging and way out of line.
