Fluid Maintenance

I have had my truck for about eight months now, but I am just now getting to change some of the fluids in it. I have a letter here from Ford stating that the trans fluid should be changed every 30k, fuel filter every 15k, air filter every 30k, but this is what I questioned it says the tranfer case and front axle every 150k. Is that right?

I think we should make up a list of fluid maitenance for our trucks. We should list when to change the fluid, what kind of fluid to use, and how much it should take. I bet if we posted this in that article section a lot of people would use it.

Here's what I could come up with

Engine oil & filter 3-5K(conventional oil) 10w-30,10w-40
Fuel Filter 15K
Transmission oil 30K Mercon V(18qts)
PS oil Mercon V(2qts.)
Engine coolant 30k(green) 100k(gold) Use what is already in
Brake fluid Dot 5?
Tranfer case fluid 150k Mercon(3qts.)
front axle fluid 150k 75w-140(3qts.)
rear axle fluid 75w-140(4qts.)

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong and fill in the blanks.

DON'T USE 10-30 OR 10-40 MOTOR OIL. Use 15-40 oil (I use rotella) Or its synthetic equivelent

Engine oil needs to be a Diesel Engine Rated oil, preferrably 15W40 or a Synthetic 5W40. i do believe there are some diesel 10W30s, but i think u will see most people use the two i mentioned.

Transfer case takes two quarts of ATF.

Brake fluid is DOT-3 or 4, definitely not -5.

Takes about three quarts of ATF to change the power steering/hydroboost hydraulic system. Some say four, just to be sure.

75W-90 in the front differential, though you COULD also use 75W-140 synthetic (as in the rear).

It's 75W-140 syn, front & rear. It had 75W-90 up front, but Ford put out a TSB saying 75w-140 in both now. Either is good I guess, but might as well make it easier on yourself and buy one type of fluid.

They also put out a TSB about using Mercon V now. Which I would do if I were you. Since Mercon is no longer directly licensed, the manufacturers *could* change the formula. Ford changed the specs on Merc V and now it's the ONLY licensed ATF for our trucks. I use Mobil1 Syn Mercon V, in there, but there are lots of other options.

And here is a copy of the owner's manual. Save these for reference.

Can any one confirm the 150K interval on the transfer case and front diff? This seems way too high but tahts what the letter says. I think I seen most people change it at 50k or maybe 100k but even that seems like a long time to be on the same fluid but ford says to wait until 150k.

If Ford says to change it at 150,000, you KNOW what will happen if you change it sooner than that!

You should always change the tcase fluid the same time as when you do the tranny every 30K miles is what i do. I believe the owners manual says the same thing. Its only 2 qts of atf . I know the owners manual says 100K for both rear ends.

And think about what that 2 qts of atf would look like if you drove it 150K miles never mind how it looks like after 30K if you dont use syn. I dont think the tcase would like 150K on that same 2 qts just my 2 cents.
