Slack in powertrain?
I have a new 2019 Ford f250 XLT 6.7 and at 400 miles I began to notice a noise. When I first bought the truck it did not have this noise. The truck now has 1200 miles on it.
While driving at low speeds, approximately 10-35 mph, then briefly letting off the accelerator pedal then back on the power, I get a light clunk noise. It is not real loud, but it is noticeable. The transmission is not shifting at the time of the clunk. The transmission could be either in 1, 2, 3, or 4th gear when the clunk sound is heard. (I have not heard it in 5 or 6 gear).
Things I know:
It is powertrain related.
It does not happen all the time, mostly at low speeds.
The transmission is not shifting.
Happens mostly after engine is fully warm and truck has been driven for 20 minutes or more.
Could this be:
The drive line slip yoke
Tranmission
U joints (front or rear)
Rear axle pinion gears (I do have the electronic locking rear axle)
Can someone suggest how to test (or test drive) these components and determine where the problem area is?
I would like to be informed before I go to Ford. I don’t doubt they will say, “It is operating with Ford specs”. This is my first truck so I don’t know what operating sounds are normal and what are not.
Thank you for advise
The way to test is examine the truck on jack stands, assess the movement separately at each u-joint, slip yoke, and rear end. It’s the summation of clearances across each of these components I think your feeling. As long as each component is in spec, you don’t have a issue. Well a safety issue. I would just be careful to check the u joints and slip yoke. Entirely possible to have a component that’s not right, then take it to the dealer to have warranty address.
