am looking at a 2010 f150 4x4 lariat that shifts and drives great a
thru all gears and down the hiway . the truck makes a clunk whenever you start to move from a dead stop ? go about 5 feet and it runs great? my 07 fx4 has 247,000 miles and still dosent make any noises , the 10 has 75,000 miles on it ford maintnence oil changes and trans flush am going to have mech look at it , anyone think of possible items to zero in on? it has the 6 1/2 ft bed with 2 pc driveshaft ,
obviously it's impossible to tell without hearing the noise itself, but nevertheless ...
greasing the slip yolks is something that was common, but it's also something that i haven't done in ages. and as far as i recall i don't remember ever having to repeat the service if done with the PTFE lube. also, the 'noise' from that was just as often felt as a shudder as opposed to a clunk. still, it's an easy thing to check and remedy.
at that kind of mileage i'd be quite mindful of the rear end. when you talk of a clunk when starting from a dead stop - especially after changing direction (forward from reverse, or forward from park) - my mind immediately goes to excessive backlash between the rear crown and pinion.
the two piece shafts do get faulty steady bearings. we used to stock them when i worked on the east coast, but here in Alberta I'm yet to do one. instead i just rebuild rear ends like it's going out of style
Mine was definitely a "clunk" or "clank" noise. It was most noticeable if on a bit of an incline such as leaving a stop sign or light.I lubed the rear driveshaft splines as what was mentioned with the Ford spec grease and it was all good after that Mine is a 2012 SCAB 5.0 6.5' bed
