I’m thinking my 77 F250 has the wrong steering wheel. Doesn’t look right and it does not go on far enough to make the horn contact so horn doesn’t work. It looks like the original column. Can anyone confirm if this is a later wheel or? Thanks!
The wheel is similar to the one on my '76 F-250, but I don't remember that large "gap". I'll recheck. Bill (NumberDummy) will probably know the answer.

This is a 1978/79 F100/350, Bronco and Econoline steering wheel and horn pad (horn pad used without Speed Control).
The correct steering wheel and horn pad: 1971/77 F100/350, 1974/77 Bronco, 1975/77 Econoline except 1975/77 F100/350/Econoline with Speed Control.
Two different 1971/77 horn pads without Speed Control: Black camera case finish (Custom/Ranger), walnut wood grain finish (Ranger XLT/Bronco Sport/Econoline Chateau).
Both of these horn pads are repro'd by Carpenter. The 1971/73 wheels were available in colors, but in 1974, Ford replaced them with a black steering wheel (D4TZ-3600-A).
Carpenter repro'd the black steering wheel, but the last time I looked (about 6 months ago), he was out of stock.
True 77 has the metal piece spring clipped or screwed (?) under the steering column, yours looks to have it. A 78/79 has a plastic piece that is screwed to the underside of the dash. So you have a 77 column and looks like you have a 78/79 steering wheel and horn button. A 77 steering wheel has a smaller horn button that sort of mounts inside the middle section. See pic 1 and 2.
On a 78/79 the horn button and pad cover the complete middle section. See pic 3 The incorrect steering wheel could be your problem. Did you pull the horn pad off (remove 2 phillips screws from the back side) and see if the horn wires are even connected?
I seem to remember that on the older it is a 2 wire connection one slips on and one is like a U clip that goes in a hole in the middle. The 78/79 had 2 connections. Even more in a curved plug, if you have cruise.
Thank you for the great detail/clarification guys. At least now I know what to look for. DC Website shows them back in stock......for next payday.
Rich,
I did have the pad off as the upper shift collar and bearing needed replaced. Both horn pad wires connected. Looking through the gap (thats not supposed to be there) I can see the little brass spring contact is too far away from the racetrack on wheel to make contact. If I ground the brass contact, horn works so at least everything thing else in circuit is OK.

What diameter is the base of your steering wheel? I bought one that was supposed to be for a 78/79 and it’s about 1/4” too small for my column. I can use it but I wish it matched my column diameter.
I'll check diameter this evening. I'll have no use for the one I have once I get a replacement so if you wanted it I'm sure we can work something out. Maybe your wheel will fit my truck since its smaller.

Thats what I was thinking. I need one that’s 4” diameter. The one I have is about 3.5”. And it’s not in the best of conditions.

1978/79 F100/350, Bronco & Econoline: D8TZ-3600-A without P/S = 16" diameter .. D8TZ-3600-B with P/S = 15" diameter
