Hello,
This sits under the finger cup in the armrests of my '79 F-350 Trailer Special. I can't for the life of me find it in aftermarket catalogs or the dreaded ebay listings for armrests, but without this brace/spacer the finger cups would sit too low. It looks like part of the armrest but I haven't been able to find anything like it.
Thanks,
John
NOT a separate piece that can be ordered and replaced. The piece/tab is molded to the inside of the door panel. Only way to replace is it to replace the door panel.... but...read on.
I have overhauled a # of door panels with that problem. Its sort of getto, but works and that way you do not have to replace the complete door panel. I have made a thin sheet metal overlay to reinforce that area after you 2 part epoxy it back together. Since you have the broken piece you are alot better off. Get some thin sheet metal and make a reinforcement plate. Easy enough. JB weld or 2 part epoxy that metal piece to the door panel. Drill your normal finger cup screw holes in it.
Also notching the door panel where the 2 door handle metal plate bolt heads contact it (no worries the arm rest pad cover the notches) and hold is out. That way the door panel fits tighter. Also get some METAL finger pull cups. LMC $13.00
And a few more views. The green door panels are junk and are just a pattern I use. Some of the pics are my prototype and really getto when you are missing the rest of the broken piece.
Reread your post. The finger cup is suppose to set on top of that plastic piece. Then the 2 s/m screws hold the finger cup and panel tab in place. And that plastic tab is all that holds the center part of the door panel to the door, when you close it. That is why getting some metal finger cups is a great idea.
Ah, everything makes sense now. Many thanks to everyone for clearing this up, think I'll give repairing these a shot before ordering new. The disappointing aspect of all this is if I'd replaced the door strikers when the bushings broke and fell off I wouldn't have pulled so hard on the armrests closing the doors to break these in the first place. Dumb.
FYI my new plan is to make the top 2 fingers longer and curve the ends to somewhat lock them in place. And roll the other edge over, like the opposite side. That way I have double metal to reinforce the plastic tab.
