Totally, yes, I get it. It was more for finding where the clutch was biting pedal travel as i could see the RPM drop slightly. Just helped me get a feel for it. Anyways at this point i don't need the tach like but just thought it would be more ergonomic up on the dash.
A couple of tanks of gas and a road trip should help with the feel for shifting. Good luck.
Here's an online rpm calculator you can try. Scroll all the way to the section at the bottom, and type in your tire height and gear ratios. It gives you the approximate rpm for any speed. You can use that to figure out what speeds you want to shift at in each gear for now. Make a little chart and tape it to your dash if you want. Then once you learn the sound of the engine you'll be more ready to shift by ear.
It's an NP435 but yeah. pretty indestructible. I was definitely timid on the go pedal when first starting and found myself shifting too soon at low RPM and too low of speeds. It would of course bog and maybe even backfire/cough. Now i wind that 390 up to ~3k and shift her and and she loves it.
With a 390, making 3K rpms your shift point seems excessive to me....unless you're towing/hauling a heavy load or climbing a steep grade. On the flat ground without a load 2.5K should be plenty.....
