Tach

Hello my 97 f150 does not have a tach .I have a manual trans and I think a tach would come in handy. Is there a factory dash cluster with a tach ,if so is it hard to change ? and what do you think the part would cost. Thanks for your replies.

well we can tell you how to use the built in digital tach if you want. kinda a PITA but better than nothing and it does not cost a dime, and is harder to read of course than a typical gauge

1997 & 1998 trucks have the analog dash and do not have the built in diagnostic function --so you will have to add a tach. The wiring harness should be the same on with/without tach models so it should be easy to find another dash at a wrecking yard and swap it out.

You can't do the digital tach on the 97 & 98's? Man, I learn something new everyday.

ghorne: If sigma is right (and he prolly is) then you can't do the digital tach thing.

you can do the whole digital tach on your odometer if you want but if you want a real tachometer thats a whole different story. you could buy a whole new gauge cluster that would cost around 370 from the dealership, or you go the aftermarkter way if you want. im not exactly sure if your 97 is the same set up as my 02 but for aftermarkters you have to also but a adapter because the coil pack on the ignition coil does not have a negative coil feed you can plug into. the adapter reads the # of times it transmit to computer and turns that into a readable tach reading... not sure that all makes sense but if you want more info please feel free to give me an email and ill send you more info and the tachometer instructions.

You do have a test tach in your truck, hold the reset button for you odometer before you put the key in, put in the key hold for a few second, turn on truck, let go when it says 'test'. Then hit the button to change mode until you get to the digital tach.

Talking

Thanks Jimmy Dean! The Diag. Tach works great. It'll hold me over for a couple of months until I can buy a cluster with a Tach.
