hey all, i recently purchased an 02 f350 crew cab short box srw 4x4 7.3l power stroke diesel pickup. i knew it needed some work when i bought it and i thought i'd ask a question before i throw any more parts at it.
the abs light was on when i bought it. i replaced both front wheel bearing assemblies, (one had a bad shaft bearing and the other one was making noise). i was hoping this would solve the abs light but it didn't. i do not have anything for pulling abs codes which would be the smart thing to do. the speedometer works fine so i don't think its the vehicle speed sensor. i have had the light go off a few times but it always comes back on within a mile or less.
what else should i look at before i take it to a guy who wants money to hook his tester up.
One of the sensors went south. Revisit the connections, since you just R and R'd the hubs.
Check that no fuses were pulled to fool it. Could have been a simple fix that someone didn't really care about.
I run with no OBS because I plow in the winter. I like it. Feels more educated than the Government telling me to lock em all up or slowly drift into a Mercedes..
I'll look for your pin out on the abs. (No promises)
Look at what Mark said above, if your sure fuses etc are good. Crawl under and inspect the wiring to the dif sensor. If it looks good pull the sensor, Make sure it doesn't have a bottle cap attached. Reinstall after cleaning. Not sure at this point.
You can get a code reader at Autozone for under $30 that also reads abs codes; good to have available .
Had a 2006 F350 plow truck that the abs light would sporadically come on and off. Per the code reader, it was two of the sensors. Never had any issues with the brakes so I never did anything to fix it.

It might work on your '06 but ours are different and specific equipment is necessary to scan them. ForScan is the most popular at the moment and TorquePro is well liked too.
Mine went out with a new set of front hubs, but mine is also 2WD. I firmly believe the new hubs' reluctor rings are just set back a tiny bit too far and the sensors can't "sense" their presence. Not yet confirmed, but it's been like this for 2 years now. I'm gettign ready to do front ball joints again, and will dig further at that time to see if I can coax the reluctor rings out a tiny bit, or perhaps drive the inner bearing races a tiny bit further into the hubs.
well i finally replaced my vehicle speed sensor on the rear diff. the light is still on. i drove it twice since i replaced the sensor, about 5 miles each way. the wire harness looked good, speedometer still works as it should. i dont know.
the sensor is an electro magnet right? so diff fluid doesnt have anything to do with it. do i need a scanner to clear the code?
i crawl under the pickup and traced the two wires from the rear diff speed sensor. didnt see any issues. with key on, engine off, i got 5.4 volts between the two wires. speedo still works just fine. the only code that i shows is C1230
should i replace the speed sensor again? should i replace the abs control module? there arent many parts left to replace in the abs system.

You are measuring voltage between the two pins of the rear abs sensor, when Ford (per Workshop Manual 206-09-24 Pin Point Test F3 for DTC C1230) and the previous poster recommended measuring the resistance. Measure the resistance, and if the resistance is less than 800 ohms, or greater than 2,500 ohms, then yes, spend the $15 and replace the sensor. Again. Heck of a lot cheaper than an entire ABS control module.
had same issue with both my obs 7.3 and my current E99 7.3
Several weeks ago my 99 ABS warning came on and I ignored it for just over a week as it would not always come on. Then went the speedo, odometer and no auto shift. Picked up a VSS from napa and it was dead out of the box, so I thought. I measured voltage, not resistance as other posted stated and it was good. That was a Sunday morning. Dealership couldn't get one til Tuesday and I popped that in and it was all good but still the ABS was on. Bought the pigtail even though there seemed to be no water intrusion as I could see and I added more wire to go up to about 6" from body harness and wired it in. ABS stayed off when I started her up and hasn't been back.
