I'm swapping out the 240 6 cylinder in my 74 E100 (50,000 original miles with a C4) as it just doesn't pull the SuperVan along. I managed about 20 years ago to get a donor 74 E200 with a 302 3 speed manual and I recently had the engine rebuilt. A couple questions - can I dump the EGR on the 302 (2 bbl - it is built into the carb spacer) and just use a non EGR Ford carb spacer? Would I have to swap out the intake manifold as it has the EGR hole in the carb mounting face?
The other question I have is regarding the harmonic balancer. The engine shop put in an RV cam as they thought it best for a van application. Any special balancer recommended or just stock replacement from Rockauto?
Any thoughts appreciated on the swap or or any experience with setting up a 74 302 would be welcomed.
Well a 302 isn't going to break speed records in these vans either. I had a 69 Club Wagon Chateau bought new, had it for ten years. Ran 21 second 1/4 miles. The balancer needs to be a 28 oz/in unit, and has to have the same number of bolt holes that the old one has to bolt the pulleys on. And yes you can dump the EGR as long as your state doesn't require it to pass emissions. I would change the intake too, either go with a non EGR 2 bbl intake and bolt on a Holley 350 or 500 cfm 2 bbl or go to a 4 bbl and use a 450-600 cfm carb. A set of headers would also free up some power.
Thanks for the reply. No emission testing here. Would any intake manifold that is pre EGR work (289/302) I see there are a couple of mid to late 60's mustangs 2 barrel intakes on Fleabay. I guess I would have to watch the spacer hole size to make sure that is not too small for the throttle plates for matching up a carb
Interesting - it looks like from my factory Ford manual that Holleys came on 330 and 361s in 74.
I see you are in Louisiana, like to get down there someday I'm up here in ole' Acadie.

Yea, any 60's 2 bbl intake for a 289/302 will work. A Holley 500 will bolt onto the stock spacers. Been there done that on my ole 69 Club Wagon in the 70's. 4 bbl performance in a 2 bbl carb. You'll need to modify the fuel line some to connect it to a Holley, but otherwise it's a straightforward swap.
Appreciate it, any issue with throttle linkage or transmission kickdown with the Holley? I think I will put one on. Thanks Randy
If you're getting a new Holley, it should have the parts with it to hook up the linkage, not sure about the kickdown, but worst case, you can do without it, you'll just have to downshift manually when the transmission won't do it on it's own and you feel the need to.
