Amplifier power wire routing

Installed a new amp and sub in my '99 EB Expe. the other day and really not digging the sound. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item...NVX-MVPA1.html is the amp for small footprint with decent watts. https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item...-SW2002D2.html is the subwoofer so it fits in the factory box. I think I matched them up okay and the sub wired to 4 ohm atm. I have an aftermarket head unit and I ran a new RCA front to back.

Long story short it sucks. I've either got the adjustments off or I didn't match it up well. Another possibility is I'm using the factory power ground wire to the amp. It recommends an 8 ga. so I purchased a KnuKonceptz Colossus 8ga. kit. My question is, has anyone run an amp wire from the battery through the firewall and what is the best location to do that? I'll post my adjustment questions in the stereo forum once I get this wiring run.
