Lately my sync has had some issues with bluetooth connections and turning off on its own. I am running an android phone that updated recently and the connection has become worse. Is there anything that can be done to resolve the issues? Today i drove for almost an hour with out an issue, when i was almost at work the connection started to drop and reconnect.

Sounds like your APIM is showing signs of going bad.
This is a well known problem so you’re not alone.
You can try a soft or master reset but more than likely, the problem will return.
The only way to be sure is to take your vehicle in and have the APIM checked.
I had a problem with another device and received the following from the vendor:
The most likely cause is your location services being turned off. As of November 2018, Android requires that location services be turned on to access Bluetooth 4.0 and later devices. This only affects newer versions of Android so it is likely that you are running an older version on your tablet that doesn’t have this requirement thus allowing it to connect.
I went into android auto setting and made some changes. Turn wireless off I think location on automatically. Also turned dual mode on in android bluetooth settings. This was a godsend as I can now turn the volume down on Google maps nav with the radio dial. I think my bluetooth sync connection dropped everytime my phone searched for a wireless connection. Having AA turn off wireless when connected stopped the dropping. Having location on allowed the connection.
When my APIM started going bad it did exactly as your did THEN more and more problems. Well known issue lots of information on other threads. Would suggest you look at them as well.
I had this problem on my Fiesta and I could get the system to reset by pulling the fuse. It would work for a while before dropping Bluetooth again. Eventually that fix quit working and I got the APIM replaced under warranty.

I believe this is incorrect. I have a Pixel2 with the latest Android version, and this is not so for it. If you have a service-provider's phone (AT&T, Verizon, Tmobile etc etc) then it may be so because they run their own special modified versions of Anrdoid.
I know that some of the service providers are demanding location data because they are seeing one login of Pandora (for example) accessed simultaneously from multiple IPs in vastly different locations, indicating account sharing....and of course that's eating into their bottom line. So some of these services are starting to ask for location data. That's when I start turning stuff off.
All I can say I was having issues connecting to Sync as was my wife after our phones updated to the latest Android version. When I turned location on and wireless off my issues went away. My wife still had them. Changed her phone settings and now she has no issues. Software can do a lot of unexpected things. Do have Verizon. Samsung S9 and S9+.
I have that problem from time to time with my Samsung Note9. It cycles connected/disconnected then I get a message from Sync that it's not able to maintain a stable connection. I find it happens more often if I've got multiple Bluetooth sessions on the phone, like when connected to Sync and my Gear Watch. Or the OBD Bluetooth adapter. Phones don't like juggling that many connections simultaneously and Sync gets jealous.

That was the issue we were having. They went away with the changes to android auto settings and changing the phones bluetooth advanced settings to dual mode.
