Hey guys. Was replacing the signal switch in my 66, and noticed the steering wheel is about a half inch higher than what it should be. Is there something that can be adjusted so the shaft will go down?
It would normally be possible to loosen the 2 bolts under the edge of the dash that hold the steering column bracket and move the column up in relation to the shaft. But, that seems like a fairly large gap so if that doesn't do the trick completely there might be something in there assembled incorrectly. The solid center shaft runs down straight to the rag joint coupler so there is not usually any way to move the shaft down further since the coupler hooks directly to the steering gear and that's bolted to the frame.
If you take a picture of the lower end it might help us identify any abnormalities there like a torn rag joint.

Chad
ill get a pic of the lower part later tonight. It looks right but something could be off.
That is a helluva a gap. Also mention whether someone has modified anything in the past - like added power steering; whether you have the original transmission with the original shift mechanism - things like that
That much gap tells me that the lower steering shaft bearing is toast, The lower bearing retainer did not just come loose and allow the column to slide on its own. If you look down there and that retainer is up in the tube you have a problem.
This is what it should look like.
Got it all situated. Just slid column up and adjusted the sleeve at the bottom so that’s all good now. Here’s my next problem. My left turn signal works great. My right one, the front and cab light works, but the rear doesn’t. And when I hit the brakes while the right signal is on, the right signal stays on and the rear lights go out. Lol
The new switch is sloppy. Pull the wheel and push down on the switch and see if there is anything different with the lights.
still does the same thing. Noticed there’s some color differences between the old one, new one, and what’s on the truck. Guessing some wires are messed up
