Hillbilly Frame Machine Fun

My brother calls it "caveman" but is the results that count. So my surprise after taking off the bed was a bent frame that someone "hid" years ago by mounting the bumper crooked and lowering the back right corner of the bed. I wasn't anticipating this project but I couldn't go on without dealing with it, I've used frame machines in body shops and wasn't gonna take no for a answer. Luckily I have the right tools for the job, thank god for hydraulics. The left side was nearly 2" lower than the right with a bend at that bed mount block and the brake line bracket, there was a little kink on the bottom rail and a little bulge by the bracket, the last two feet or so was also slightly arced. Two and a half hours later I still have a tiny droop, about 1/8" as you can see by my 4x6 straightedge, but its good enough for the girl I go out with so I'm callin' it done. As you can see from the back shot it'll be hard to tell, the cab and all crossmembers line up quite nicely, even still if I have to I might shim that back corner with a washer or two shhhh don't tell!

I like it - ingenious really. If the cavemen had not made it , none of us would be around now.

Nice job. Turned out great. I have done that with a few frames as well and I dont think you could get any better than that. Doubt you or anyone will even notice. Even with that tiny gap I bet it bolts up fine.

Between growing up on a farm and my time in the Army, I have come to live by the mantra- if it looks stupid but it works, it wasn't stupid!

Ingenuity is in short supply in todays society. Shop classes and not having much was the best thing that ever happened to us older folks.

I have fond memories of a '56 F600 bent in the middle--maybe a hump over a foot. A piece of railroad track, multiple chains, multiple 12 ton jacks, and every flame making device short of candles my old man could fire up.

Got it straight.

Nick,
Who are you trying to kid?? Yeah, I doubt few to no people will notice, but if Cheddar is like me, he KNEW about it & fixed on it; so his eyes will look for it everytime he walks around it. He may not say anything out loud - but I'd bet his eyes will be looking for the gap/sag - even if its just fine for his girl and anyone else. Been there - done that.

Amen, sadly as a group we've cheated two generations of kids by being suckered into a rush to People magazine utopia and retirement on the beach (ha),
I hear though that the youngest kids are getting sick of the mamby pamby crap and I know here in VT the Tech schools are all ramped up and busy. Won't save us in the short run but maybe there's hope for the future, there's a 12 year old home schooled kid in town who I'm gonna invite to help me rebuild my Jubilee and teach him how to drive it (and then get him to work for free). Thanks for all the good comments, I just like to have fun like you guys.

Oh, that was aimed at Christmas' comment, and Barnie you're right as rain but I can live with it, like I said, I'd put a washer under it and pretend rather than have a sag I could see, even though this is gonna be my work truck, it'll work hard but get treated nice, its replacing a 04 GMC that I've had for ten years and put 15K on it, can't deal with the electronics anymore, gimme points and a condenser anyday…

Very true. I would be the same way. Hopefully when it's all bolted up it would be hard to notice.
