Realized after driving home one day with the tailgate open that it would be nice to have a dash light of some sort letting me know its open. Now im wondering about wiring in a door sensor for the tailgate that will make the truck think one of the doors is open.
Sounds like a good idea until you need to haul something longer than the bed. Maybe add a switch somewhere inline to override the open signal it would send.

Yes, this would be nice. I don't know why it doesn't give you a warning in the dash like for other door ajar, even turns my in cab lighting red in that door when the kids don't close it right. Yes, I have a 17 with the user delectable interior color lighting. Because I have a tonneau cover, I cant see that it is left open and a lot of stuff could fall out if I was on one of my long trips..
I do remember I got a notification on my dash the tailgate is open, but I think it was because the truck wasn't running when I loaded, I then started the truck, when I moved from Park to Reverse I got the notice on the dash in a orange dialogue box.
I thought about making one.
I could not come up with a durable enough switch that’d be suitable for tailgate use...
ld use ignition on power with no override switch so if ignition was on, I’d know gate was down. Reminding me gate was down with something in bed biggger than 8’...
I did one on my 2005 F250 with a prox switch (detects metal) and a led light with a push button on the dash for over ride. I was thinking about adding it to my 2019 as I have a Line-X Stealth cover and cannot see the tailgate in the mirror. I have all the parts and just need to do it but I am working 13 hrs a day 7 days a week right now...for a reference I got my 2019 F350 mid December and just turned over 1700 miles on it as I have a rental car to/from job site.
Over on the F150 forum, we just discussed this. This LONG thread has so much detail, my setup is HERE at post #149. I have the shock that controls how fast tailgate opens. I tie-wrapped a switch to that. Its all hidden.
