It requires driving in between each drain and fill ...... to mix the old and new fluids (must drive it in a manner to ensure that the thermostatic valve opens for enough time to fully circulate). It is really closer to 88% by the numbers.

AND, it's really "over-kill" when compared to what the actual FOMOCO service manual suggests isn't it? All Ford wants is a drain and fill (+ filters) every interval?

That's right - they didn't even have hot flush machines, yet said they would "flush" your trans, early on... As long as one is keeping up on the 30K schedule, it should only be a dump and fill and front filter - the original internal filter was a life of the trans filter. Now you've gone 10K past but depending on how hard you used the truck (like is the fluid nice and red), may still get buy with just changing the pan and new internal filter and putting 9 qts in (bigger pan) and replacing the front TP filter.
Then you will need to change that internal filter every 60K... It wouldn't hurt one bit to keep doing the standard service every 30K... Just remember it's 9 Qts now...

Yeah, this truck has been very lightly used only towing my (5000lb) boat a couple of times since I got it. The fluid is "nice and red".
I'll do the 3x drain and fill and do 30K from now on.

You're welcome, but thank Mark for the 3x d&f option - personally I wouldn't do it unless I felt the fluid in there was compromised. If I just wanted to feel better, I'd do the new pan and filter and front filter and 9 qts of your choice SP, LV, Maxlife, and then change it again in maybe 10K miles? Fluid should be plenty fresh... But everyone has to make those $ decisions themselves. Putting the '08 filter on is IMO more important than flushing all the old fluid out (again, if it is still in good shape)...
May you have many happy miles with this awesome transmission!
I think doing the cold flush for me was a no brainer when I changed to the 08 pan and filter. I just got the truck about 8 months ago and since I didn't know the service history and it had 105k on it, I went for it. It was probably a good thing since my fluid did look nasty after I drained it.
I finished my bit of Mercon Luv drain and fill + new pan and filter today! O O O O'reillys had Mercon LV for about the same price as MAX life so I used the LV.
Only a wee bit of "fuzz" on the magnet and that was about it! the old "rock & tree" filter was pretty much clean, and (once I finally got it off) the toilet paper filter was a tad dirty but not all that bad!
I wonder what kind of an impact wrench FOMOCO used to put that filter housing on!! Had a rough time getting it off!
Did new fuel filters too.......I think Ford makes every type service as hard as possible!!
You should break open the old pan filter and see what's inside.
I'll do that! Looking in through the hole where I can see, there's pretty much nothing.
The TP filter just had a little dark discoloration. There was what I would call a fairly "normal" amount of "stuff" on the magnet. After 40,000 miles (since new), unless I find some big stuff in the old filter, I think I am "good".
I'll do a couple of "drain/fill" (s) over the next few months.
Unless there's burnt fluid, I think the "flush" is probably unnecessary.
