Rick,

All that on the screen looks familiar.

It actually gives me a better feel for the amount of debris in my filter at 200K. IMO a lot of that is the initial break-in, then should settle out. Although I had more ferrous on the magnet.

Mark,

I'd have to go back years ago and look at what I did if I still have the data. But I tend to use conservative numbers. Overall, even at the lowest temp turnover, it would be fine. for me it was about doing better protection of the pump and TC with better-filtered fluid going into those items. Maybe a small point, but a better human feel.

Well said Jack. I might still go that way, but at least I have had good luck so far.

Thanks for that info -- I checked mine a couple times and never got into the 10th quart I had bought. Another forum member who is long gone went maybe nine and a half and thought it was too much. I'll get mine good and hot and check it again. I'm assuming hot level check is like 170-180 deg range...

Just be thankful we don’t have to check the fluid level like I have to do in the LS, same as Mustang.

Thread Drift.... a term I'd not heard before but inherently knew about, and had been on many a wild ride in Alice's Rabbit hole...

So today I did my first trail ride on our "relatively" young horse that is, well Mine... It went great and that means there is a lot more of that I am looking forward to...

So here's the "drift": yesterday put new tires on the Expy and Horse trailer, and today I was thinking about how nice that 4R100 is and how nice the Torque is in the old 2V 5.4. And I told my Wife about a thread on here about possibly putting the 6.4 trans pan and filter on our Expy's 4R100 (the old thread just got resurrected). And while we are driving home, towing 7K or so up hill... The light went On (usually it is Off): the reason you wouldn't (even if it would work) put a 6.4 trans pan and filter on is the FLUID! That filter was designed for a very low vis fluid and you might starve the trans if you tried to run MercV through it...

In other news I still hate the Civil Legal process. Damn I should have been an Atty, they make money answering the phone...

But I digress... (as usual)

You guys carry on and bring the thread back to something meaningful, like which fluid to use in a Torqshift...

You're saying that the 5R110 pan might fit on an E4OD/4R100?

After pouring nearly 10 qts in my 5R110, I didn't really notice that the viscosity is all that different than M5.

Having said that, I've got a spin-on filter for my E4OD using the BD filter mount and a WIX 25 micron filter.

Mercon V
Viscosity:
cSt @100°C 7.5
cSt @ 40°C 33.2
cSt @ -40°C 10,000
Viscosity Index 205

Mercon LV
Viscosity:
cSt @100°C 6.0
cSt @ 40°C 29.6
cSt @ -40°C 10200
Viscosity Index 155

Mercon SP
Viscosity:
cSt @100°C 5.7
cSt @ 40°C 27.3
cSt @ -40°C 8610
Viscosity Index 155

Mercon V is a tad higher Kinematic Viscosity at the same temps and the VI is higher but it might not matter to the filter.

OTOH, it might make a huge difference in solenoid operation.

A good read on VI:

Thanks! You did the homework I should have... Yes, in another thread Jack and another member that visits us now and again (but has a 7.3), I shorten his handle to Y2K, were discussing the fitment - but I don't know if it went anywhere, as in did anybody try it. They both back-researched it: finding aftermarket pans that fit a 6.0 and 6.4, and then 7.3 and 6.0 (IIRC) so extrapolated a 6.4 pan would fit a 7.3... Filter? dunno, would the 4R100 pump work with the set-up? dunno...

The filter I am using for my E4OD is the BD filter they sell for a variety of diesel truck transmissions.

I didn't buy the kit though. I opted for just the BD filter mount which was about $30 from Scheid Diesel.

The entire kit is somewhere north of about $225... I wanted to use the BD filter mount because it has a calibrated bypass valve. I don't know what pressure they set it for but I presume it's set close to the ford installed bypass tube on the 4R100 (which I have on my E4OD)

I'm using an equivalent WIX 51268 filter instead of the Luberfiner LFP5570 . I don't know much about Luberfiner filters but I know that WIX is at or near the top of all filters. The luberfiner is $16 or so and the WIX is around $8 and on the shelf at my local NAPAs
