Ford Transmissions

I have two 68 Ford truck transmissions. The one in my work truck has the aluminum tower and is noisy and the other one I want to install in it has the cast iron tower with the screw on shifter cap. I noticed that the tail shafts are different lengths and the cast iron trans has a bigger driveshaft. What model trans are these two and can I swap the cast iron one to my truck without too much trouble? thanks.

Think we are going to need a little more information.
Are both trucks 68's?
What models are they?
Do you have the numbers off the door tag?
Are they both 4 sp with granny lows?
What motors are in the trucks?
You say the tail shafts have different lengths are they both slip or bolted yokes?
Any numbers on the side of the 2 tranys?
How about PTO covers 1 or 2 and on what sides and remember left & right is when sitting in the drivers seat.

You have a choice of two 4 speeds available: The Borg-Warner T-18 and the New Process NP-435.
The T-18 will have B-W casting marks and will have either T-98 or T-18 cast into the top cover. Reverse will be right and up.
The NP-435 will have N-P casting marks and reverse will be right and down.

Unless someone replaced the T18 with a newer one and reverse is also right & down as the shifter almost hits the seat in my 81 F100.

Thanks for getting back to me. Fuzzface2, both trucks are 68 F250's. Both are the the truck 4 speeds with granny low. don't know about the yokes yet as i haven't got them out yet. My truck I'm putting the tranny in has the 300 cu. in. six and it is a NP-435. The truck with the other good tranny is the cast iron top cover T-18 according to one response I've had already and the engine is a 390 V-8.

The other is the New Process 435 4 Speed. Its shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-B) has two notches, it's retained to the tower with two pins.

To remove this spring loaded cap, it must be pressed down by hand and held down while turning it counterclockwise to remove it.

People unaware use pliers or channel locks to remove it, which tears out one or both of the notches. Not pleasant!

Hi all, an update on my transmission project on my 68 F250 with a 300 cu.in. six in it. It had a noisy NP435 in it and I'm installing a T-18 good used unit in it. Turns out, it's a straight across swap. The case is longer on the T-18 but the tail housing is shorter so it's the same length, so it'll bolt right in. The rear yoke swaps but wasn't needed as the u joints are the same also. I live here in the foothills of California so my truck will see temps ranging from 20 to 110 so what would be a good trans oil to put in it?

A synthenic 75W90 works in the NP435, But I'm not sure about the T-18.
