I've seen a couple of YouTube's where guys will coat the underside of their trucks with Fluid Film https://www.fluid-film.com/ to halt rust.
Lately I've been using this stuff instead and I must say I am impressed with the results. https://www.rustoleum.com/product-ca...-and-inhibitor
It's a gel, so it sticks to vertical surfaces and it turns ALL rust into a black substance that can be primed and painted, or left bare. It will inhibit further rust growth for up to 12 months.
The best part of it, is that it is water based and cleans up easily....the bad part is that it is slightly corrosive (phosphoric acid) and will affect bare skin....as I discovered while spraying some front-end bits.
Seriously though...this stuff works great! Once the rust has been dealt with, I'll touch it up with some Tremclad rust paint and rejoice that I've held the rust at bay for another year.
Rust stopper.... till the US Navy starts using it... I pass...
the stuff that turns rust to black.. has been sold under many names since the 1970's..
it might slow rust... ( prevent more air and moisture contact ).. but does NOT STOP RUST..
once rust starts... there is NO known way to stop it.. just slow it...
even the electronic sacrificial metal devices do not work. not for long..
50 years in the used auto business...
I see we have the same basic truck.. ..mine has 167,000 miles.. and TOW Heavy.
,
total rolling weight is 18,000 pounds.. and twice a year.. 1,800 miles in 4 days.. 30 degrees to 110 degrees... or the other way.
and you are seeing it correctly.... 60 feet long... with a 800 pound motorcycle... and a 200 pound generator.. and more stuff...
doing this for 5 years. and LEGAL...
IF you keep it moving.. it really slows the rust....
POR-15 is used heavily in the car restoration industry. It does a nice job of coating and stopping the rust. Just don't get any on your hands. If you do don't go to bathroom to urinate with it on your hands.
I've worked in the body and paint field for forty plus years the only way to stop it is to cut it out or replace the effected panel. Don't trust the pimer on aftermarket parts take a little thinner on a rag if the primer starts washing away finish removing the primer etch the metal then come back over it with a 2K epoxy two full wet coats and walk away till the next day epoxy has about a 24 hour window for recoating with primer surfacer and it will last longer than the vehicle will and it's the same process for cutting and chopping there are a lot of good products out there to slow and inhibit the growth of the cancer but not one of them will stop it completely.
