Changing oil filter without the mess

Has anybody figured out how to change the oil filter without the mess when the filter comes off and that gush of oil comes out?

There have been other threads in this....recall one guy suggesting punch a hole in the filter with a screwdriver to let it drain first.

Yeah, lots of posts on this: replace drain plug with fumoto valve and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter. I drain both at the same time. By the time crankcase is empty, so is filter.

Did my first oil change yesterday on my 2019. Used an "AWL" on the bottom of the filter and let it drain.

I use a long shaft #3 or #4 Phillips screwdriver. Yup, love using screwdrivers as chisels and punches.

A friend of mine uses a 1 gallon ziplock bag over the filter before removing it. All the oil stays in the bag. This is actually on his Mustang GT500 but the principle is the same regardless of vehicle.

After I puncture and drain the filter I will loosen it and then slip a plastic grocery bag over it and unscrew it the rest of the way. Then I will slip the whole thing into the box the filter came in and close it up.

I do the same thing as Bob does above.

Still have some mess. I put an old piece of carpet on the driveway before I crawl under., As much to protect my elbows crawling as to catch any oil that splatters. Couple oil changes and I throw away the carpet and get a new remamant of the next job
