Hey folks, truck is in the shop getting the driver side rear brakes looked at. It failed DMV inspection for it. And I’m getting exhaust in the cab. My guess is it will need an exhaust system. What should I do? I’ve looked online with no help. I’m thinking duel to one with a nice sounding muffler and 90 or 45 down right after the muffler.
I could also do duels but with the gearing I doubt I’ll see any increase and I certainly don’t want to kill any power.
Im told do a straight pipe but I’ve always heard u rob the motor of power and cause the valves to float.
You'll have to call around, prices can vary significantly sometimes. Start at the manifold, make them do the work. You want dual exhaust. Nod your head "yes". Then put some smithy or porters steel-pac exhaust on it. This will allow for better breathing. It won't kill any power. It will be reasonably quiet if just burble along, but have a nice growl when required. Don't need big pipes, just 1.5" to 2", it will sound great but not objectionable or ticketable (probably).
Brakes are always worked on in axle pairs. So if there's a problem at the rear drivers side, the rear passenger side gets (should) the same treatment. New cylinders, new shoes, spring kits, whatever the case may be. That keeps everything on the same page, no pulling to one side or mismatch. So kind of plan for that when ordering parts &c.
I used a universal mandrel bent 3" over the rear kit, plus a 3" muffler and ran a 2 1/4" (also mandrel bent) 2 into 1 system that is plenty big enough for a 352 truck engine with an Autolite 4 BBL carb and moderate cam. I wanted to leave the driver side open for an auxiliary fuel tank someday.
Here is another option. I ordered a hooker system from Summit Racing for a 66 2WD longbed. It was available for headers ($270) or manifolds (~$300); I used the header kit. It is complete system from header/manifold to behind the rear tire side exit with 2 1/4" pipe throughout (after reducers for header application). I ordered some extra hangers and higher quality clamps which cost another $75. The system takes the drivers side exhaust to the passengers side and both mufflers are side by side on RH side of vehicle. Here is a photo:
My advice, consider routing the exhaust anywhere but forward of the rear wheel. After a 'do it myself' installation of an exhaust system, which lasted several years, finally had to take the Hooker Headers to shop and had them repair and route the exhaust just short of the rear angled outward and over spare tire rack.
I soon will be finishing mine. Mine is a 66 4wd and I had no luck finding a replacement similar to the stock setup. I ended up buying a system "close to what I needed and modified the crossover pipe.Everything else seems to be a close fit so far. I'm into it for about $95 so far and about a full day.
As purchased......I had the muffler already
Crossover pipe modified
Crossover installed
No modification needed on Y pipe from passenger side down
I wasn't looking to go the header route at this point. This seems to be a good solution for a very close to stock setup. Just another idea for you
Did you resolve your exhaust manifold issues? I ask because from the pictures you posted in the other thread they are leaking. You will never stop the exhaust in the cab until they are sound.
Hey 66with352, any chance you could specify what "system" you got that was close and where from? That is looking like what I want and need to do just about exactly. I also have the muffler. Thanks for any info in advance

I used the Walker 40516 Y-pipe , Walker 42371 crossover pipe (this pipe had to be cut up and really modified to clear my front differential) and the Walker 46326 exhaust pipe. On the walker website, I believe that combo was for a 72 2wd f100. I searched around and found the parts on another website and paid $78 for all of it with 2 walker 31405 gaskets (donuts). I also had to buy a few 90 degree pieces and one straight extension from local auto supply to use for crossover pipe mods and the extension I mentioned for the y-pipe. All in all I think I spent $120 for the entire system.
I think i'm going to take off the exhaust pipe and modify it though. I personally do not like the exit behind the right rear wheel look on my flareside. I'm going to bring it either straight out the back or end it over the axle like they originally were.So if you want the exhaust pipe to end over axle, you could delete the walker 46326. The last mod was easy, the y-pipe didn't allow the muffler to sit under the old hanger mounts (i assume my mounts were in the original positions) so I added a short straight pipe to the Y-pipe so the muffler sat back just a little further. One additional note....My truck is a F100 with coils in front and 4wd. I'm not sure how the pipes will fit around a leaf spring front axle.
I know it's a four-letter-word here but I went with the dual exhaust glasspack system from LMC. It's working well for me, went on well, and sounds pretty good. Here's a quick video of that work from my YT channel:
Wow that's great thanks, I haven't seen too many shots of stock and my shop manual has one picture of a "typical" system that you can't see clearly how it exits, what do you mean end it over the axle? I was going to either just use a downturn or run it straight out the back, I don't see your final exit piece after the muffler, is that the 46326, the one that goes over the rear axle but it has a turn out?

Yes, the one that attaches to the exit side of muffler goes over axle and turns out behind the passenger side rear wheel. I am changing that to a straight pipe out of the muffler and stopping above the axle with a turn down. I can't get a pick right now because of bicycles and everything else that shouldn't be in my garage in there and in the way. That's what happens when it gets to hot and humid in jersey to work on your truck, everyone just throws crap around your 6 year and still going project
