I have two 1966 F-100 2WD styleside pickups; one a shortbed (black tailgate) one a longbed (blue/white tailgate). I was curious as to what the "correct" tailgate is for a 66 2WD styleside. The two tailgates on the trucks are very different in appearance. My understanding is that 64-72 styleside tailgates for 2WDs are interchangeable. The repop places only list two tailgates and they are listed for replacement on 64-72 trucks, but they never say which years the tailgate is an exact replica of --- one is an import version (no FORD lettering stamped on tailgate) and the other is manufactured by Dennis Carpenter claimed to be using original Ford tooling (link for DC https://www.dennis-carpenter.com/en/...---styleside); I'm pretty sure all the other places are just reselling the DC tailgate. The DC tailgate has a horizontal raised area above the handle and is listed as a C7TZ part -- does that mean it is a reproduction of the 67 tailgate and not the 66 tailgate?
Here is the tailgate on the 66 longbed - it looks a lot like the DC piece, but does not have that horizontal accent above the handle. Is the one in this picture the correct tailgate for the truck?
The shortbed has a far different (and much heavier - twice the weight) tailgate; I think it is from a later model truck, but not sure what year - here is a picture:
No big deal to me either way, but sometimes curiosity just drives one crazy and you just want to know! Thanks as always - I always know I will get answers when posting here.
^ This is a tailgate finish panel for a 1970/72 F100/350 Ranger. The tailgate may be C7TZ-9940700-A = which is correct for 1967/72 F100/350.
But who knows for sure which tailgate is under the finish panel. The 1967/72 tailgate has smaller FORD letters than the 1964/66 tailgate. These letters are surrounded by raised ovate scallop line.
ALL the mounting hardware for both C4TZ-9940700-A & C7TZ-9940700-A is exactly the same.
And...in September 1966, Ford obsoleted the C4TZ tailgate, replaced it with the C7TZ tailgate for use as a "service part replacement."
Your overweight black one likely has lead filler from 70's repair work. I agree the blue/white is correct.
Not liking the sound of that - I think I will just scrap that tailgate then; it has a lot of rust repair needed and if it has lead I would not want to sand, grind, and weld on it nor would I want anyone else to.
Bill,
What is the 70-72 Ranger finish panel made of? Is it anondized aluminum like the body mouldings? How is it attached to the tailgate?
Is it correct that the horizontal detail above the handle (red arrow in photo below) is indicative of the 67-72 tailgate, but not found on the 64-66 tailgate?

Raised ovate scallop line that surrounds FORD letters is visible on backside of tailgate, so it's not necessary to remove the finish panel.
Ranger finish panel is pictured in post #1, Ranger XLT is walnut wood grained (decal).
Pics: Clips pictured as letters in the circles, see lower pic to see what they look like.

Thanks Bill !
The backside of the tailgates look exactly the same (except for the screws on the black tailgate holding on the ranger panel) FORD letters measure the same size and are same "font" on backside of both and their is no "raised scallop line" visible on backside. So both are the 64-66 tailgate. Maybe I will see if anyone on the 67-72 forum restoring a 70-72 Ranger needs that bling panel.
Pic of 1967/72 tailgate in post #5. Raised ovate scallop line surrounding the FORD letters. This is stamped on the 'gate, so it's visible on the back side.
1964/66 'gate has large FORD block letters. 1967/72 'gate FORD letters are smaller and the F - R & D have fonts on them.

Bill,
What is the part number for the 70-72 Ranger tailgate bling panel? I was going to put on e-bay and see what it will bring to cover some of the cost of the 67-72 service replacement tailgate Dennis Carpenter is selling. Thanks!
