Another dumb tailgate question...

ok, i consider myself pretty mechanically inclined, but this tailgate is driving me nuts! do the hinges go in the gate first, the "slide" the gate in then bolt it down? do the supports have to be off first?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the dumb question.

John:
My recollection, just removing the gate a couple months ago...
Place pivots on pins and slide into proper position starting at a slight angle. Hove someone support the tailgate and bolt the pivots to the bed.
Place hangers on keyways and rotate them to proper position while someone supports the gate. Bolt hangers to the bed.
Someone will correct me if that's not the way....

Tailgate pivot. I have an old Ford pickup trailer of your vintage. The previous owner cut the bottom of the pivot off one side of the tailgate. This allows for easy removal and replacement of the tailgate. This has been VERY HANDY over the years.
No one would ever want to steal my tailgate, so I still have it.
I would think that with an intact tailgate you would slide one end onto the previously bolted on pivot and then put the other pivot into the other end of the tailgate and figure out how to bolt that pivot onto the body.
Or trim the bottom of one end of the tailgate like my PO did.

C4TZ-9940700-A .. Styleside Tailgate - Has large FORD block letters - 1964/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD

9/1966: Ford replaced C4TZ-9940700-A with C7TZ-9940700-A .. 1967 (1967/72) F100/350 Styleside tailgate (has smaller FORD letters surrounded by a raised ovate scallop line) for use as a "service part replacement."

ALL the mounting hardware and the tailgate handle is the same for both these tailgates. The tailgate supports (aka 'scissors') were also used on the 1973/79 F100/350 Styleside tailgate.

If yours is a 92-96 it will go on that way...I'm assuming in this forum...its considerably earlier. You shouldn't have to cut anything...Ford put it together without doing that...
Just get a second pair of helping hands.
