Steering box bad?

Morning.

I have a daily driver project 97 cclb with 6" lift and 35 inch tires. I plan on restoring the truck to like new, but i am moving states before that happens. Hopefully next few weeks. I need to drive the truck about 900 miles to our new home. A few weeks ago i was dinkering with my steering shaft because of the play it seemed to have while driving, i noticed the shaft(s) were loose where they meet. I got a bright(dumb) idea to put a hose clamp around the 2 shafts to tighten them up. It worked!!! Steering felt great...... now i think i pissed off the steering box, because it is loose entering the gear box.

New replaced right?

Im literally in the process of moving out of my house and probably need to have someone do the repair since my garage is packed away. Anyone have insite or advice on what i should expect to pay or any other problems there may be?

Thanks in advance

Steering box has an adjustment on it, it cant be too tight or it will stick/bind but you might be able to take some slop out of it.

If that don't work then time for a https://redheadsteeringgears.com/

Is it obvious when it is too tight? Or will it just keep tightening

If you don’t know how to adjust the gearbox then leave it alone

Learning is one thing, learning on one that is in use on the road is another. If it’s too tight the steering can get locked up causing you to not be able to steer.

If you want to try it then loosen the lock nut and turn the adjustment screw in 1/8” turn at a time then go drive it. Repeat till you get it where you want it. When it starts to get to tight the wheels will start not to return to center.
