ok, here's the deal. we finally had my truck ready for a safety, we brought it to Canadian Tire today and they said it needed a new steering box. my dad is a mechanic and i moved the steering wheel back and forth while he looked at it and he said it wasn't that bad. my dad said there was abit of play in the steering shaft but not much. a new steering box is $300 so were debating about taking it somewhere else for a safety to see if they say anything about it. whats your opinion buy a new one or take it somewhere else?
Well it is a 20 year old truck so it's possible it might actually need a new steering box. What I would do is adjust it to take as much play out as you can and take it somewhere else and see what they say.
I have a 1992 and also tightened up the steering box which helped. I did end up replacing the steering box a few years later but it had almost 400000km on it. The best thing you could do though is never take your truck to Canadian Tire for a safety. I have found that they will always nickel and dime you.
I went in once for an alignment and they told me I need new ball joints. They were only one week old! When I confronted them on it the answer was, well they felt a little loose!
Another time I went in for an e-test and was told that I neded to replace both manifold gaskets. Drove down the road to another place and was e-tested without issue. That was over 7 years ago and the same gaskets are still in there and it is quiet.
I don't trust them and nolonger go there even for the simplest thing.
If your steering gear box is going or gone you will be the first to know. It will be leaky or really have play. You have to be the judge in those cases. Find a little local guy who you like and does a decent job. People like that arent going to pork you.
When my steering box finally went it had started to leak but the most noticable indicator was a "floating" feeling in the steering and play in the wheel.
And yes, find a small local shop that other people recommend and trust.
A friend worked at Canadian Tire in the store and he claims that the mechanics actually earn a commission of some type for the parts they sell. Not a good set up for the customers.
