Steering box questions

I've got a '93 F-150 4X4 steering box in my '97 Explorer SAS. The steering has fairly significant "dead zone". The “dead zone” is described as very light steering wheel resistance while going straight, consisting of 10-15 degrees or so, with corresponding zero change in direction.

All steering components are DOM tubing and heim joints. The steering box is mounted tight to the frame. Most heims are new and tight- the drag link heims are looser than the rest but I don’t think these are an issue as they don’t really have slop in them.

Tires are 33x12.5r15 BFGs.

The steering box though…… it lived a life prior to the life under my Explorer. It came from a junkyard truck with unknown miles. Should I try tightening the adjustment screw on the top of the box? Could there be air in the system?

I’ve read a little about the Redhead Steering Gear box replacements, should I go this route?

By the description of your symptoms I suspect a worn steering box. You can try to tighten the screw on it, but do not go very far. Most likely you will end up with a new/rebuilt steering box.

Great looking project!
