So here's my dilemma. I have replaced the batteries, both selinoids(starter and wheel well). When I turn the key it starts cranking on its own until it starts or you unhook the batteries. When it does start it sounds like the starter selinoids is still engaged for a few seconds. Truck sat for several years. Did all the fluid changes and drained the gas tank. What is the problem??? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I should mention that it is a 1997 7.3 heavy duty. F-250 . I don't want to ruin the flywheel.
Make sure the solenoid on the fender is the proper one. Here is a crappy picture of my 97, the wire unplugged is the trigger to the relay and goes to 12 volts when key is in start position, energizing the relay. Also make sure the connections are correct. Big lug in front has most of the wires connected to it and big nut in rear has just the big cable going down to the starter. Unplugging the small wire as shown in the picture and the truck should not crank.
Well I changed the solenoid on the firewall and tried everything you guys suggested. Nothing changed. Took out the starter and the starter is not retracting every time so I took it to a guy to have it rebuilt. Hopefully that will fix it. I'm thinking not though. Why would it keep cranking after you release the key? I'm perplexed.
Was your starter a late, Super Duty style? If not, I would upgrade it. SD ones crank faster and harder. Or, lose your mind and buy a real Denso like me and it sounds like the engine will fly out from under the hood.
It still could be the ignition switch or a clapped out starter.
Did you just pick this vehicle up? The PO could have performed some 'hacker wiring' and installed it wrong.
