2011 Trans Fluid Drop/Fill

Towing season is coming here and I want to freshen up the trans fluid on my 2011 6.7L.

I'm at 76K miles. Book says @ 100K, but I want to change it early. Having no problems - just PM as 1/3 or more of my miles are towing. I've read that thereis little need to drop the pan and filter if having no problems, which is my case.

Here's my question: How many quarts can I expect to drain by simply pulling the plug?

Thanks.

The 2011 fifth printing is 150,000.

Thanks for the reply kper.

To me, it's cheap insurance to be proactive with trans fluid changes, even though I'm not a 3 month/3000 mile guy for engine oil.

Still looking for the drain/fill amount to have it on hand.

I'd drain, drop pan, clean metal off pan and magnet, replace filter with a new filter, and put pan back on. Around 7.5 quarts if you do this.

You will get way more metal out of there doing this, compared to just draining via plug.

I have read 8-9 quarts from others but nothing from technical documentation since it's a partial change.

I was planning for 100,000 because I thought that was the correct interval but was reminded of the 150,000 after checking. I decided 100k may not be necessary. I'll still likely have it changed early, such as I was planning for 125k instead but my understanding is the heated flush is the correct procedure.

I don't know if the solenoid replacement procedure called for fresh fluid. I had that repair at 32,000 but assume they captured it in a bucket and reused. The dealer isn't going to give free fluid if Ford doesn't cover the cost within the warranty. If it did call for (partial) fresh fluid, then mine is newer.

Just checked my owners book, and you are correct (which you knew ) on the 150K interval.

I'll still change it now and will have at least 8 qts on hand. Of course I'll measure what actually comes out.

Thanks!

Once I reach 50k I plan on a fluid and filter change every 50k. I don't know if it makes a difference, but most of my towing is less than highway speed. I change gears A LOT.

Take a look at the video in this thread why extended oil change intervals is not recommended.

I've always heard of 30k mile pan drops. My truck has 39k now. I did a pan drain, drop, filter, and clean At 31,450 miles. It was close to 8 quarts. By doing it every 30k, IMHO, you maintain the additive package and it won't require a flush. When you do this, the magnetic donut in there will have the break in metal on it. Here's a good video.

I'm on my cell so copy and paste the link.

Another good one if you wanted to flush the old fluid out. I used this procedure to do my son's trans in his 99XJ;

Forgot to add that I did the transfer case also -- XL12 fluid. The manual says 2 quarts but I needed to buy a 3rd quart. It took 2.25 quarts.

The general feeling on here seems to be 150K is waaaay to long. I just did mine at 60K, and it took almost 9 quarts. This is on a 2015 PSD.

Oh, and this weekend, both diffs and transfer case are getting fresh lube.
