Hey all - I'm going to be changing out the trans fluid of my 84 E-150 and I wanted to know if there are any quirky things that might not be mentioned in my Haynes manual. I've never changed trans fluid before, but I figure it's simliar to oil..just with a little more bolts involved.
There is a drain plug in the torque converter that can be accessed by removing a small tin plate between engine oil pan and trans housing , you may need to rotate the converter to get the plug to the bottom, but by doing this you change almost all the trans oil vs just a few quarts by only dropping the pan.
the quirky part is not making a mess. since the stock trans pan doesn't have a drain screw, you need to loosten the screws in a sequence so that the trans oil will drain from one side of the pan. Even though the manuals describe this, it never works for me. So once I get the pan off, I buy a transmission drain kit, so I can drain the fluid much easier. This is especially handy if the tranny is overfilled and you need to get just one pint out. You have to drill a hole in your existing trans pan and bolt in a plug with a plug. They work great.
Since you are going this far, inspect your trans filter. If the filter is clean you can just put it back with a new gasket.
Finally don't overtighten the oil pan bolts. The pan is is soft and distorts easily. If the trans fluid has never been changed before you will find a dust plug with an oring on it, in the pan. Just throw it away.

I have used a piece of 3/8 nylon brakepipe (airline for truckbrakes, is a bit stiffer than pvc) and an inexpensive gearpump from the hardware store, mounted on the drill.
Use a piece 1-2 ft longer than your tranny dipstick, and prime this with fresh fluid before inserting this in the dipsticktube.
Works great to drain most of the oil from the pan, then the pan comes off without making a mess.
