2016 EXPWY 2WD oversteer

Ive been messing with this for awhile and still dont have a answer. My 2016 steering is VERY sensetive. It oversteers very easily. I was thinking of upgrading the shocks and struts but not finding many decent manufactures making this for the EXPY. Any suggestion? It has done it since new. I did get rid of the 18" tires and went with 20" . that helped but its still there. Any ideas? Neither Bilstein of Eibach make any that fit...

Sometimes an over responsive steering issue is due to the Toe alignment being off. Have you ever brought in in somewhere and had the alignment checked?

What alloro said above ^^^^^^ and:

Is the rear end sitting high or the front sitting low or is it factory level?

Does it have stock suspension?

Does it have stock-diameter tires?

Does it have stock-width tires?

Does it have the same size tires all around?

Isn't part of the issue that it's a front wheel drive vehicle? My wife's 2016 has MUCH more sensitive steering than her RWD '03. And don't even get me started on the difference between her car and my rwd Excursion!

No such thing as a front-drive Expedition. Plus when I saw oversteering in the title I thought you were doing some drifting with the thing. Hanging that tail out on the turns!!

Unless of course you remove the rear driveshaft and drive around with it in 4WD.

We are discussing a RWD Expedition. Original poster--could you please DEFINE what you mean by oversteer? In a race car, or on snowy/wet roads, it means the rear end of the vehicle spins out. If you mean that your truck turns sharper than you expect without breaking traction at lower speeds, you probably have an alignment issue if your suspension is stock. If your suspension is modified in any way, please describe the modifications.

Unless you have an imbalance in front/rear suspension, changing springs or shocks would not be expected to help you. I would first get a good 4 wheel alignment at a competent shop, not a volume tire store or someplace that does alignments as a profit center, as a starting point. 20" vs 18" tires should not do anything meaningful; Expeditions had 15" wheels for years with no characteristic oversteer problems.

The issue is with a rwd expedition. The 18” tires were very sloppy. Didn’t feel planted at all. The 20” helps overall feeling. But the steering is very touchy probably alignment. I had planned on taking it in for alignment but found out Billstein now make shocks for the Expwy. I just ordered them and will be leveling out the truck then get the alignment done.

Hi Firedaniel:

"Didn't feel planted" is pretty vague and if you had enough air in your 18" tires (and assuming the tires were not faulty), they have given tens of thousands of Expy drivers a normal SUV-type driving experience. An Expy is a large vehicle, closer to 3 tons than 2, and with its high CG, would never be expected to be a sporty handler . But it should be expected to drive in a straight line and go around curves in a smooth and predictable fashion.

Shocks affect wheel bounce when you hit bumps, and if the old shocks were dead, that would definitely be an improvement. If the steering is touchy, it is more likely an alignment issue. When you say you are "leveling" the truck, what are you changing (or unchanging)? Are there alterations from the factory suspension? Any suspension or lift/lowering changes from stock can certainly affect alignment and my first instinct would be to get it back to its stock height, front and rear. If by "leveling" you mean "raising the front end", you are messing with stock alignment, hurting aerodynamics, and are going the wrong way if you expect better cornering. Raising a truck or car does not help it go around curves.

As I think I mentioned in my original post, take it to an alignment shop that is accustomed to dealing with trucks and handling issues, not just a $19.95 chain store that uses 1960's technology and tries to sell you parts you don't need. But also consider the possibility that you might have a prematurely worn-out tie rod end or something (been there, done that).

Good luck,
George

Im dealing with a similar issue. 17 expedition el 2wd on 18's. truck wanders on the highway. Had the truck aligned and its still wandering. Im thinking its the crappy Hancoock tires on the front of my truck. going to swap them eventually to michelin tires. rear already wearing michelin.

Unmatched tires on 2 axles can themselves cause instability...I'd get matching Michelins on all 4 corners ASAP. And yes, I would guess that Michelins would work much better than Hankooks if that's what the OP started with. I have had probably 15 sets of Michelins in my life on all kinds of vehicles (dating back to 1970 when they were new on the US market) and have never been unhappy with them. LTX's are great for every on-road SUV and truck application. (I have 2 vehicles with Michelin Latitude Tours on them right now and will probably switch them over to LTX's when it's time for new tires.)

So the original tires were 18” I upgraded shortly after buying the truck to 20 Hankook tires. Still wonders on the road although not nearly as bad. The ride is just sloppy. I’ve had several f150 trucks. I know how they ride. My 2018 f150 had similar issues. I put Billstein 5100s on it. It really cleaned up the ride. I just ordered New Billstein shocks for the expy and hopefully get them installed this week. Hopefully it will help.
