Question Front End Shake at 55 mph plus

I have a similar shake to one posted earlier. The fix appeared to be one of several options. The first was a wheel out of round (eliminated), second something called a front steering stabilzer shock (can someone tell me where this is) and alignment. The last possibility seems likely but I can't seem to find specifications for correct toe in/out for the front end to test before paying someone to realign the car.

Steering Stabilizer - Look at the front axle (4x4) located in the front is a shock. That's the stabilizer.

I'd crawl under there and make sure all your steering components are tight, too.

Does the vibration go away anywhere above 55mph?

Are your tires wearing oddly?

Why do suspect alignment as the culprit?

How many miles do you have on your present tires?

Define the shaking (ie. up down, side to side etc.) as well as the specs of your truck.

You had your tires balanced?that would be my first guess, second is your tires wearing funny or getting cupped or lumpy?Alignment itself wont make your car shake generaly, but alignment can make your tires wear badly and that will make your car shake. The steering stabilzer could cause a problem, but a tie rod end or ball joint could also cause this. The alignment spec is .25 degree for camber, and the toe is set at 0 inches.hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The stabilizer shock is out because mine is a 4x2. The shake is at about any speed above 55. It does seem to diminish slightly once above 75. The tires are newly new. I suspect alignment as one of the possible culprits for no reason other than I'm searching for an answer. The problem does seem to be getting worse with time and mileage. I'm checking to see if the tires and wheels are completely round today. I guess one way to check the idea out is to have the spare placed on the front and see of the problem goes away.

I also have the same problem

i have a F150 supercrew 2001 4.6L and at about 60 to 65-70 mph the truck shake's and the stops at about 70 or 75. i haven't looked into it but was thinking it could be a motor mount or trans mount. I had a ranger and it also did the same thing and it was a trans mount. If any one fix's theirs plz let me know thanks. If i get a chance to check mine out i'll let everyone know

Exclamation Steering Shake

I hope you don't still have the original Firestone tires. My Steering shake was all about the original garbage tires.

In my current 02 V10 4x4 Excursion, the culprit was the steering stabilizer. This happened almost 2 years ago when I took my truck in to Ford for a 30,000 mile checkup. I never mentioned the fact about the "shake" but noticed they replaced, at no charge to me, my front steering stabilizer and noticed the shake was gone. Now, when I had my 99 Expedition, I started experiencing the "shakes" when I had the tires cross-rotated (meaning front right tire to rear left tire - I hope I explained this right). No amount of balancing including forced road test nor alignment solved this until I replaced all tires. Then I recall someone at the Expedition forums mentioned that due to the weight of these vehicles, one should not cross-rotate the tires as they break internally - meaning the belts inside the tires. Ever since after I bought the new tires, I only rotated the tires on the same side so that the tire rotation was the same. I never had problems on the Expedition since. Now my Excursion I noticed started to shake again today at certain speeds coming down from NYC. I noticed that the steering stabilizer has a leak. Is this even possible? How often do we change these stabilizers? Might be time to replace with after market.

Sorry to the original poster. I meant to add my .02 cents and ended up having questions myself.

I have this too out of my 4x2, with 80k miles. I got brand new tires thinking this would cure the problem. It has 20" wheels placed on it by previous owner. I know when I hit 55mph..the wheels feel like their about to come off. Subsides above 65. Much as I would love to replace them myself...but I'm not that mechanically incline, nor have the tools or time. So what is a reasonable price to replace the following...and what order should I go to have this corrected. I was thinking of getting an alignment 1st but after that..

Upper & lower ball joints?
Tie Rod??
and whatever else may be causing this? Thanks.

First time poster...On my 03 Impala, I had a real bad vibration, changed brakes all the way around, no fix, changed front rotors, no fix, had mechanic friend look at car and it ended up being the rear rotors...Sounds strange that the rears made the front end shake but it fixed the vibration...Just my .02
Great Forum by the way

had the same on my 01 X 4x4. i have 22" wheels. they are not the problem. i had to replace the front hub bearing because of the bad clicking sound and after i took it off, it was loose and definately bad. when i replaced it, the vibe went away.

I would say it is your front tie rods, my aerostar started the over 55 thing. I almost waited to long and came upon replace more components than I had to. I would say that your steering seems a little less responsive meaning some slack in the wheel.
