Just bought a 2001 7.3 Excursion and preparing for a 1000 mile drive home. I checked the vehicle over and find the front hubs are in Auto but I can't move them by hand to lock. The selector on the dash is in 2 wheel drive. The hubs aren't hot after a drive on the freeway. Seems to drive fine. Can I get it home before having the hubs serviced? Any coaching for a new Excursion owner would be appreciated.
If the inner axles or driveshaft are not turning then the auto hubs are not locked, if one of them is stuck in the locked position then you can just remove the entire hub without tools although a pair of pliers makes it a bit easier.
squeeze the spring clip and pull it out, then remove the hub
