early 2000's rear axle compatability

Hey guys, so I usually spend my time bothering the poor souls down in the 73-79 trucks, but I have one for you if you don't mind helping me out.

A buddy of mine uses an early 2000's e250 as his work van and it blew the rear axle. I'm wondering what axles will swap in and work. The axle his has is a dana 60, it has 3.73 gears, and the data plates read V2C24-LC and 606836-1. We think that the motor is a 4.6. Lokar has one that works, but there seems to be something to the V2C24-LC tag, as lokar has some of the other 3.73's in the same age range that it says won't work. So here's the stuff that I hope to know.

What does the V2C24-LC mean?
What does the 606836 mean?

What other vans/trucks can I look at to pull a rear axle out of that might/will work?

Thanks in advance guys you're the best.

What do you mean when you say "blew the rear axle"? ring /pinion? or axles? case?

It looks like it sheered a tooth off the ring or the pinion and tried to send it through the pan. There's a hole in the pan about half the size of a dime with a dent about the size of a quarter around it. After it went bang my buddy was able to limp it home so my guess is it was just one tooth off of either the ring or the pinion. Either way it needs replacement.

Could I set it up with new gears? Yeah but by the time I've bought the gears and the rebuild kit, I'm into it for more than double what I would pay for a junkyard axle in both time and money (I can set up rear gears but I don't do it often so it takes me a long time to get it right).

If I do go the rebuild route do you have any recommendations? We're on a tight budget so I was thinking junkyard axle but I'm open to suggestions .

For a direct bolt in you have to use an axle from another 2k+ E250, pickup axles have a different leaf spring spacing.

Thanks Conan. Any idea what else would hold me up with a swap? Different yokes? Disc/drum codes? I figure that's what those codes at the top of the thread relate to but I haven't figured out how to decipher them yet.

I'm not sure what those codes represent either, is your truck rear disk or drum? There were several gear ratios available with and without limited slip and of course the brake differences but the basic housing, spring perch and yoke are the same for that year range so they would all bolt in, you could also use a D60 full float axle from an E350 and get an upgrade to rear disks with an '05 or later axle but that would likely require other braking changes like a master cylinder and the current wheels may not fit over the hubs.

Ok thanks again. It's looking like we're heading to the wrecking yards tomorrow to find a winner. If I can find an e350 with 3.73s in it I think we're going to jump on it. Once again you guys are the greatest thanks for all the help.

It is my experience with a rear axle swap in my 02, that a 99-02 is what will fit properly. I dont recall what the differences are, but I think it had something to do with the speed sensor/computer. Again, dont quote me, but there was a definite reason why I had to use a 99-02 in mine. I do know that Ford uses a different spline count, than any other Dana 60 rear axle.
