Hi, I have a 1993 f250 with an IDI diesel. It also has the e4od transmission. I'm wondering what measures I can take to make this transmission last? Some say to not pull hard Hills in overdrive, others say not to downshift from overdrive to 3rd gear. I haul a small camper and an 18 foot boat with it. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
X2 what timbersteel said. You should add an aftermarket cooler and make sure its a good one, not the kind with just one tube snaking back and forth. I added one to my '91 Bronco about 20 years ago on this same advise and that trans had 250K miles on it and still going when I sold the truck.

You don't have to worry about that, especially if it's N/A.It wont be pulling no hills in OD and when towing it wont just be downshifting out of OD into 3rd but into 2nd lol. You'd need a turbo and running interstate speeds to keep it in OD but even then,it's not likely to pull them without dropping to 3rd even at that. These old IDI are low hp engines.
All you need to do is shift into D.The trans knows when to shift.
