If you just Have to do a flush, then do it! Ford had both procedures: drain torque converter and sump gets most of the old fluid out, or you can flush. If your trans fluid is dark then do a flush and get that last quart... Somewhere around '02 they stopped putting drains in the Torque converters, that's when flushing really became, ahhh, necessary. Some folks get very AR about every drop of old fluid out, to each his own...
Best of luck...
Scott
Yes, I am doing the flush. I am nervous about adding MaxLife as it says it's compatible with so many vehicles. Did you have concerns when you first starting using it 4R100 transmission? I canceled my order for 20 quarts from Rock Auto.
I haven't put it in yet, but I believe it is a better fluid than Mercon V. The trans I'm more iffy on using it in is the Torqshift - I may stick with LV or SP for it... Walmart and others carry the gallon size btw...

I bought a bag in the box of Mercon LV from Rock Auto last year for under $100 for flushing my Torqshift. I pulled the filter and installed a plastic tube in the hole and sucked the fluid up what I believe is the torque converter. That was last year. The bag was more than enough for the flush. I have fluid left over.

Interesting story I'll share: Bought a 2003 motorhome, short diesel pusher but with a huge Allison 3000 trans. Guy I bought it from was a GM transmission technician his whole career, when I told him I was going to start the changeover to the new synthetic lube for the 3000, he said why?? It's a waste of money, these things run fine and hard on Dex III. Well I went ahead and dropped the two huge filters out of the trans and put in 4 gallons of Transynd , which the blend of the two, according to Allison, would take my next change out to like 60K miles, and THEN if I did another filter and fluid change with Transynd, it took it out to like infinity...
That's where I really started liking the idea of synthetic transmission fluids...
Hey: does your new van have an external trans cooler? Just asking because our Expy came with the HD tow package and that was part of it, but figured a big van it should be standard...

it has the small external Ford transmission cooler. Nice story on your diesel pusher! I need to figure out if my 1998 5.4 can take maxlife or mobile synthetic. I don’t want to mess it up. I do t know if it has the 4r100 or 4eod. Need to find someone running maxlife. I will head over to the Fseries and inquire. I want to run synthetic like you.

I bet the '98 is a 4R100. I know a couple folks with '97 F150s with the 4.6, have the 4R70W, not sure if they used that with 5.4s...
Another place to research oils and lubes and coolants, etc., etc. is BobistheOilGuy
Yeah baby!! Although I have to say, both friends with the 4R70Ws have gotten really high miles out of them, and not easy miles either... I've wondered if one were to rebuild a light duty 4R100, if you could use the diesel components (at least more clutch plates?)... Stout tranny for-sure
I posted my van for sale on Craigslist to see if I would get some bites. One guy emailed me twice. I ignored his first email. Failed to call him back on the second. Finally called him back. He is familiar with the problem and has a shop that can remove the cab (van body). He's either going to repair the lifter or install a used 6.0.
No deal yet. I explained to him that I am busy for the next 2 weeks. Best to not be in a hurry or sound anxious.
If he decides to look at the van in 2 weeks, I will send him a link to this thread. If he can repair the engine or flip a used one in the van, he will have a solid machine for a fair price. I refuse to sell junk or hide anything. Full disclosure.
That would be a 6.0 that I would love to see fully inspected, not just for the noise but to see how a 6.0 does with those miles.
he lives 80 miles away. I hope to hear or see the results. If he pulls the cab I will drive out to see it. The 6.0 will look as as easy to work on as my old 350’s or dodge slant 6.
I sold the trusty 6.0 on Saturday to a disabled American Veteran of Foreign War. He drives all over California with his beautiful service dog. Joe knows the 6.0. We may see this van hit 1,000,000. I want to thank everyone on the 6.0 forum for being so helpful. If I get a diesel, it's going to be a 7.3 in a van. The 6.0 in a van is too painful to work on.

You'll be missed Mark, but maybe see you on one of the 5.4 related forums...
