I am not giving up quickly. However, I new used van may have to do 2003 E350.

I have plenty of time and will not jump into a new van. E350's are as common as criminals in California.

If I recall you started hearing this on a trip to Alaska & back thousands of miles ago. I think by now it would show. Metal sediment will collect in the bottom of the oil filter housing. Probe the bottom of the housing with the filter removed using a clean magnet and see if it picks anything up.

For anyone that did the 08+ trans pan update, if I remember right, I used the old magnet on the bottom of the engine oil pan. I always thought about putting a cow magnet or a small cylindrical magnet in the bottom of the oil filter housing if it would fit. It's one of those things I forget about until the filter is out and oil is dumped.

All of those button magnets I have in that list are strong and could be used in a filter. Either the bar or the plate that are 1/4” I’ve been thinking of using under the oil cooler. If a valve bolt will fit .....

I may use either of the bigger mags at the back of the oil pan. I would want any metal to sit up higher so I could pull the magnet and let the metal dust/debris flow out with the oil rather then being caught in the bottom cavity of the oil pan. Although I would hope the quantity of metal generated within the motor would be small enough to be captured at the sump for the lift of the motor.

Coolfeet, if that squeak has been there for thousands of miles I have a hard time believing it’s a lifter wheel.

it’s been chirping for 10,000 miles. I am thinking of bringing it to my buddie’s auto repair shop. He charges for diagnostics. But will not repair if he does not know. He specializes in modifications and hiot rods. He drives a 6.0. Be worth $100 to have him put it up on a rack.

I opened the the dog house and crawled under the van this Afternoon. The noise is definitely on the passenger side here’s it’s closer to the front of the vehicle.

I have over 20 rare magnets in my van for keeping mosquito nets in place! I often leave them on the vehicle and don’t think I have lost one driving

I’m going to go into SWAGGING mode as that’s how we developed a plan to find issues at work. At 823,000 miles your in atypical territory.

If it’s not a lifter wheel’s needle bearings, I wonder if the noise is the wheel sliding on the lobe ramps. On my cam there was evidence of the scuffing on the ramps.

Possible a noise out of an injector.

I was just doing some work on checking piston to valve clearance and the pushrods come damn close to contacting the rocker box. I’ve seen some pushrods in forum pictures where there is wear on the side of a pushrod. That could be a cause as well.

?.......

I think SWAGGING is all I have left. The noise is coming from the left side. The engine needs to be partially dropped to access the valve cover on the passenger side. These damn vans! I am capable of doing the repair...but lack the tools and facility. And I am SLOW.

If I get the valve cover removed, what should we look for? My friend that owns the repair shop thinks like an engineer. If he cannot do something, he does not charge. I pay only for the diagnostic time.

If the noise is only an annoyance, I will keep driving the beast. What're another 100k miles at this point? My wife really likes this van. It's hard convincing her that the engine is past the point of a normal life. Probably 2 x!

I thought I put this in a post but can't find it. The Chirp theory of lifter failure in my mind is not settled science. Remember I had big Ifs.

I am with you on it’s not proven. It’s not as logical as if you have a hole pierced in your tire then the tire will go flat.

12,000 miles or more with the same noise and not noticeably louder.

Lifting the valve cover would be helpful. It’s 2 hours labor on the van. Since it’s the front of the engine the mechanic may be able to loosen the bolts enough to raise the valve cover like a lid and peak inside.

I know I have a frequency dead spot, but I don't hear what I would expect from a lifter wheel squeak or squeal, keeping in mind I've never heard one.

It's chirping like a morning bird. It's not real loud. However, old cars and trucks have sound quirks that we tend to live with and deem normal. This one moved in last year and I became used to it until the van sat for nearly 3 months.

If I knew of an old analog program like a stereo equalizer to run the sound through, you could see the spikes I hear.

I have one more test-I think I was running the AC. Could it be a compressor noise even with the belt slipped off? I am really reaching...
