Question One piece rear window gasket

I have a 02 F-150 supercab with the one piece rear window. There is a black plastic trim around the window and in some place the rubber gasket underneath seems to be squeezing out. Does anybody else have this problem? I've never had any water leaks but it looks like a problem waiting to happen.

I havent seen this happen but even if it does leak it isnt a really big job to remove the window and reseal it.

How does the rear window attach, anyway? It looks like its just pressed on. Are there some kind of fasteners under that trim?

There are nuts behind the interior trim. You remove the interior trim around the inside of the back window to get at them.

We have that same problem, (with the "oozing", on our 2001, and on our 2002 King Ranch).

Ford told us on the 2001 that it has to be reported, and they "try" to put back in, and then if that don't work, they replace it, but won't guarantee that it won't happen again.

I had the same problem on my 2001 with a sliding rear glass. The gasket was pushing out and in a hard rain it would leak. I took it to the local Ford dealership thinking they could just replace the gasket. Turns out the only fix is to replace the entire glass. It was under warranty, so no big deal for me. If your truck is still under warranty, get it fixed now.

It is my understanding the solild rear windows will not leak with this gasket displacing itself - the rear sliders are likely to leak. In the case of my 1999 F-150, the problem started early on. I took it to the dealer - who I have trusted for many years and still do - and was told that Ford would pay to replace the gasket. But, I was also told that it was likely to do it again and that in the case of the solid rear glass as in my truck - it definitely would not leak. I discussed the process of removing that glass to replace the gasket and was told it was not all that easy. Mine was complicated with the fact that I have a shell on the truck. I decided to leave it like it was, that was four years ago and it has never leaked. Rather than the gasket oozing out (as in the case with our 2001 F-150), my 1999 model had the gasket falling down inside the window frame. I imagine Ford changed the design so that rather than the gasket disappearing within the window, it fits tighter and usually tries to squeeze itself out. If it is a solid rear window, I don't think it will leak. Since the gasket on my 1999 model literally disappeared within the window frame, I usually don't even think about it anymore - out of sight, out of mind. In the case with the 2001 model, I just push it back in when I see it squeezing itself out. Neither truck has ever leaked.

I noticed on my 2002 that where the two ends of the gasket meet, they were starting to come apart. There is like a 2" gap and i figured the ends of the gasket should but up against each other. So I drove to a couple of ford dealers to look at the new and used f150's on the lot to see if they were the same. To my surprise very few even had the black rubber gasket. It almost appears that they shrivel away and fall in behind the window. Out of 10 trucks I would have to say I only saw 1 or 2 with the gasket still in place. Mine does not leak, so I have not brought it to the dealers attention as of yet.

The black plastic trim is nothing but trim.

Has nothing to do with the window itself.

I know, I replaced my Factory slider with a aftermarket steel frame version.

Gasket is just a aerodynamic seal, thats all.

I'm having the same problem with my '97 supercab. The top of the gasket between the body and trim has a low spot where water is getting in. I bought mine used so I think I am in for a fight with the dealer. We will see..............
