I have a 2001 with 7.3L , 130,000 miles , its starting to ( 2nd time with issue - 1st time cost me $1400.00 at dealer to fix - 10 yrs ago ) loose power on heavy load conditions - pulling 32 ft 5th wheel up steep grades.
I believe its the ICP sensor in the HPOP system shorting from leaking oil.
Turning off engine and restarting cures issue . Not something anyone wants to do on mountain passes !!
I read the HPOP oil has a return line for recirculating the oil back to crankcase, but looking at the flow diagrams of the injector oil lines , they do not recirculate, its a dead end at injectors.
QUESTION : if I simply remove and replace ICP sensor will air get into HPOP system and possibly into dead ended fuel injector portion of HPOP oil rail.
Seems like this air in the HPOP oil lines will produce inefficient oil pressure at injectors, not allowing proper operation.
Similar to getting air in your break lines- a big no no.
I believe the dealer vented any air out of the left and right HPOP oil rails at back of the heads- I not sure I can perform that task in a home shop .
Thanks for sharing to anyone who has done ICP change out this at home and what your results were.
If there’s oil in the connector to the ICP sensor, chances are it’s bad and needs replacing. Make sure you replace with a ford OEM part or you’ll regret it. Also this part https://www.riffraffdiesel.com/stain...eel-hpx-99-03/. Fixes the oil rail dead end and did a great job of quieting down and smoothing out the engine. Theres also a “FrX” part that this same site sells that does the same thing for the dead end fuel rail system. Both are worth the money.... as far as air entering the oil rail with ICP sensor replacement, it’s not enough to make a difference. It’s a quick and easy part to replace, just take the advice on not buying the cheapo sensors off of eBay or amazon..... get Ford OEM, they’re expensive but these engines do not play well with aftermarket Chinese junk sensors.
$1400???!!!!!! Good grief. Something tells me they took you for a ride. Yes, replace the ICP with Motorcraft only. It's very easy to do. check your pigtail wiring for corrosion or exposed wires when changing the part. I also second the RiffRaff parts to improve the FRX....the oil rail crossover is not my recommendation, but that is personal. It just provides more leak points and doesn't really make a difference, IMO... I have tried them twice and won't do it again.
The ICP sensor change is something you can do very easily. What little bit of air if any that gets in will work itself out in no time. The oil isn't trapped in the rails permanently, it passes through the injectors as it's used and flows back to the oil pan through drain holes in the heads.
If you had to replace a part like the IPR or HPOP or injectors it would take longer to work the air out. Can take driving for miles to work it all out in some cases.
Does your ICP have oil in the electrical connector? Dealer must have done a good bit more than an ICP for $1400. You may or may not have bigger issues.
So many shops don't know what they're doing and senselessly spend money trying to solve a problem. Your truck will run with the ICP sensor disconnected, it just won't run 100% but you can disconnect it and see if the truck runs better with it disconnected If it does you know sure sure that it is your problem.
