I used to work at an O'Reilly Auto Parts back when I was in High School. It is still the best job I've ever had in terms of how much I enjoyed it. I really took pride in my job, especially when older customers would order from me and expect me to mess it up. I loved the feeling I would get when I would get them the correct part, and they would walk out of the store, satisfied, and impressed that "that kid" actually knew his stuff. I'm still pretty loyal to O'Reilly's, but I am saddened by degradation of the quality of customer service. My current career has pretty good retirement. I've thought about, many times, going back to a parts store as my post career employment. Unfortunately, I feel that I would probably just become that cranky old guy, just like the old guy's I worked with.

Not saying they are all filled with people that are just drawing a pay check. Glad to hear that you enjoyed your time there. The nice thing is that when we find a parts store with good people that try hard we tend to stay with them.

Does anyone have a picture of the correct style power steering pump that came on a 1971 F250 with a 4.9L 300 inline 6 with auto trans? I would just like to make sure my unit is original or original type.

Pic: 1967/77 F100/350 (and misc cars, 1971/74 Econoline) Ford/Thompson 'pencil neck' P/S pump (pic from 1964/72 truck parts catalog).

'Pencil neck' refers to the diameter of the dipstick tube that is part of the reservoir.

ND -- thanks for the picture of the correct power steering pump type. My truck is at my buddy's trans shop, will check pump & reservoir to see when I get it back next week.

Just got my truck back yesterday & shot a picture of the PS unit. It looks like a 1971-74 Ford/Thomson "pencil neck pump with a steel reservoir" like ND's drawing.

Is this the correct PS unit for a 1971 F250 300 4.9L?
