+Power Steering Pump

Need to replace my power steering pump in a 1971 F250 L6 300 4.9L pickup. Existing pump is making noise and the single belt pully is wobbling a bit.

Anything special I should know about a rebuilt unit? Any type better than others? Best place to get one?

Can this be had as a Motorcraft replacement that my local Ford dealer can order? I'm in Southern CA.

1967/77 F100/350 & Passenger Cars (except 1972/77 w/Hydro-Boost), 1973/74 Econoline, 1973/77 Bronco used the Ford/Thompson "pencil neck" P/S pump.

This pump has a steel reservoir, the P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump.

Back then there were no Motorcraft P/S pumps. P/S pumps were available new or thru FoMoCo dealers...rebuilt from GPD (Genuine Parts Distributors aka Tumador Engine), FoMoCo's authorized parts rebuilder.

Originally, GPD was located in Vernon near Farmer John's rendering plant, the smell was so bad, I don't know how people could work there. Today, GPD is located in the City of Industry.

But the pump is obsolete, so I dunno if you can get a GPD rebuilt or not. Most auto parts stores will have the pump, but does not come with the pulley.

The pulley has to be pressed off the old pump, pressed on the new pump. Auto parts store machine shops can do this, otherwise a special puller is required, usually rentable from auto parts stores.

ND -- Any auto parts store that might have a good reliable unit? There is a lot of junk out there! Any of the Ford parts companies in Southern CA that might have a good replacement?

I know of one, but it's in Santa Monica (Engler Brothers Auto Parts). No Ford dealer would have it, it's as obsolete as the dodo bird.

It may be still available from GPD, but I haven't had any contact with them since 1997. I also don't know the part number, because I gave my GPD catalog away two years ago to an FTE member in OK

I'm sure that someone has done it. Give it a day or so for a couple of replies.

Ya just trying to see if anyone has had good luck with some of the regular parts stores and have been happy with the rebuilt quality. Looking at 1969 - 74 trucks as a base line response.

I've had better luck at NAPA when it comes to someone being able to look up the correct part. When I went into O'Reilley's, I was the oldest person in there. When I asked if they had a fuel pump for my 69 F250 with a 390, I got the "deer in the headlights" stare from 4 different kids at the same time. One kid was able to find one (of course they had to order it). After that, every time I went in there, the manager had the same kid help me, I think the rest were too afraid that they would have to look in "those old parts books". Where I live now the NAPA shop is the only game in town.

GaryKip ---- Ya I got to agree with you on O'Reilley's & you can add AutoZone to that list. My local NAPA store is real good to deal with, may be a few dollars higher on parts but the guys know what their doing. I will check and see what they have in a rebuilt unit.

Power steering pump

Here in the New Orleans area I can get a pump rebuilt at a local rebuilder. D&S has been in business for many years, I cannot imagine that there are no “old time” rebuilders in your area.
I must agree with going to NAPA first, I think that there are only 2 auto stores around here other than NAPA that still have the books.
I grew up working at my Dad’s shop and really miss the days when I called the local auto store and just saying something like “65 Ford, 390 auto. Need a tail shaft seal”. And of course could always talk to the same guy!

Unless auto part stores start paying more than minimum wage, don't expect to see many older guys working there. I worked at Advance Auto Parts for a while, and some people there were knowledgeable about cars, but not everyone was. A lot of people would come in and assume that we were mechanics, and could diagnose every little problem and knew everything about every model.

Have you considered upgrading to a Saginaw style pump?

He would have to find ‘80’s econoline 300 brackets for the Saginaw canned ham pump.

Kenny nunes --- I do not know of a rebuild shop that does power steering pumps in my local area.
1985 Bronco --- I see no reed to upgrade as the original style works fine, just time for a rebuild.
RichS2659 --- One thing there are not is a lot of 300 motor stuff in Southern CA wrecking yards.
