C6 overfill?

Dropped the tranny pan off my Lone Ranger and only had a few quarts come out. Replaced the filter and put 9 quarts back in my 1975 F100 full time 4x4 with a deep pan with the pick up extension on the filter. After reading other posts, I did not drain the torque converter and did not realize it was an option. So, I think I over filled it and need to drain the converter to make everything good.. Am I on the right track? I did drive it around the block and it was much happier than before! It was low on fluids from setting about 18 months.

Yes, you're probably overfilled. Does the trans have a dipstick? You could check the level.

It wouldn't hurt to drain the converter and drain the pan again. That way the trans will be filled with fresh fluid, not a mixture of old and new fluids.

Yes, I do have a dipstick and figured I over filled it l, but I I wasn't sure how much would go through the cooler while running. Today I did drain the converter to fix the issue. Here is the old filter. Looks original.

Yes that's original and completely useable. These transmissions don't have filters. They have mesh screens and the screens really only get replaced during a rebuild normally.

I don't understand this.

What difference does it make how much fluid is going through the cooler when running? Check the level with the transmission warmed up, the shifter in park, and the engine idling.
