Transfer case motor

Transfer case motor
2011 F150 FX4 ecoboost. When I try to shift into or out of 4WD I get check 4X4 on the display. I have to turn the switch multiple times before the transfer takes place. When it does happen it usually goes to 4L, no matter if I'm trying to go into or out of 4WD. Before I buy a new transfer case motor is there anything else I should do. Im not a mechanic, but do some work on my vehicles. Any help would be appreciated.

I agree with steve(ill), just keep in mind that it might appear to operate normally without any strain and still operate incorrectly when installed and it actually has things to push around in there.
