Rear dvd issues

When I got my 03 limited it had the rear dvd system minus the actual dvd player. I've looked for the factory dvd player to no avail. I ended up having a double din Kenwood DDX6705S installed negating the rear factory system anyhow.
Question is, after reading the TECH folder and the 7 pages on this issue, does anyone know of a way for me to equip a new dvd player with IR headphones and make the rear dvd a completely independent system? I honestly dont even know if the factory screen even works. Currently looking into an aftermarket system that may fit into the factory screen part but retain the factory dvd cubby as storage...

Factory screen is wired up to the controller/DVD unit from what I know.

Not sure on the pin outs but I am sure it could be figured out.

Originals can be found on the web. Don't forget to look at junkyards and Pick-n-Pulls for units that fit expeditions and Freestars.
If you decide to go aftermarket, A rear player will need to be custom fit into the oem console hole, but can be adapted to play nice with an aftermarket head unit too. Its been done before, google can get you pics of others projects. good luck
